Merlin – The Sword In The Stone – Part Two – Season Finale
Just as we left off last week, Merlin and company are fleeing into the woods from Agravaine and his goons. Merlin urges the others on while he covers their tracks. He stops and calls for the Great Dragon whom soon swoops down destroying them in fire. Merlin catches up with Arthur, where they go into tunnels to hide from their pursues. Though a few such as Agravaine escape, ducking into the caves where Merlin had went into. Soon Arthur hears something behind them, Merlin urges them on, that he can delay them, cause he knows the tunnels better. They continue on, with Merlin getting Agravaines attention. Agravaine demands information from Merlin, he refuses and in turn uses magic to knock them down. Only Agravaine still gets up, then realizes that Merlin has magic and he is indeed Emrys. Agravaine says perhaps we are more alike then you think, but before he can use his magic, Merlin destroys him. Arthur worried about Merlin goes back to see if he is alright, when of course he finds Merlin alright. Tristan is amazed that Arthur has gone back for a servant. Soon they reach the caves exit, and then decide that they will hold up in the Forest for now. Down in the forest Tristan again is surprised that Arthur is actually getting his hands dirty. That perhaps he doesn’t deserve to be king, that there is nothing special about Arthur, he isn’t king anymore. An upset Arthur walks off, Gwen flows after him, where he clarifies that he will never forget what she did to him, and that will never change.
Back in Camelot, Gaius is not fairing well. And Gwaine is taken again to sing for their supper., this time Morgana gives him a wooden sword. He is successful and they are granted a little food for the three of them. Elyan tries to get Gaius to eat but he won’t, he fears death is soon, that Gwaine needs to eat in case he has to fight again. But in the end they still leave it for Gaius, and tough it out themselves. Morgana has claimed this would be their last meal anyways.
In the forest Arthur is feeling down, and ashamed that he was so foolish cause they all deceived him. The only thing he is good at is the sword, even if his people survived they will have to find a new king. Merlin not happy with Arthur’s response, calls upon the Great Dragon for counsel. The Great Dragon explains that only Merlin can make him believe that he can be king once more and restore Arthur’s faith. This gives Merlin an idea, he enlists the help of the Great Dragon for a task. Then in the morning Merlin gets Arthur, takes him for a walk, and tells him a tale. A tale of a man whom was Camelots first King, that others have not heard. There with the last of his strength he thrust his sword into a stone, that only a true king of Camelot could remove the sword from the stone. Merlin explains that he has found the location, which he takes Arthur to. Here the sword stands in the rock, all of the people of Camelot that are left still, have been brought to this area. Arthur is worried that he can’t withdraw the sword from the stone. But Merlin encourages him, that he is the rightful King of Camelot and will be able to remove the sword from the stone. Arthur grasps the sword and pulls, at first nothing, Merlin says he has to believe and he is destined to be the greatest king of the realm, not even this stone can stand in his way. Arthur re-grabs the sword and pulls it from the stone, with the magical assistance of Merlin. Proving to all that he is the King, the people shout ‘Long live the King’.
Helios reports to Morgana that when they got there to check on Agravaines progress that even the ground was still ablaze, all were dead, even Agravaine. Morgana is upset cause she knows that only one person can command a Dragon and that is Emrys. Morgana fears even the thought of Emrys.
Back at the camp in the forest Arthur and the knights discuss how to get Camelot back. They all declare that it is Arthur that they fight for, that they will go into the mouth of hell for him. Arthur talks to Merlin that he is not worried about defeating the men, it is Morgana he is worried about. Merlin tells Arthur how he has always believed in him, that he can do this. Merlin then decides he is going to go into Camelot in the form of Emrys, the old man. He sneaks in and places something secretly in the castle. Morgana is now terrified that he was there in the castle, that he is taunting her so. Helios recommends that she sleep, which is perfect. For Merlin had placed an enchanted item under her bed.
The next morning, Arthur and those who fight with him are preparing to leave. It is then that Tristan and Isolde decide that they will fight with him, cause he has shown he fights for what is right. Gwen also pays him a visit, she says she understands why he can’t forgive her, but she has never stopped loving him, not even once.
They bravely march towards Camelot, gain entry and begin the assault to reclaim Camelot. They are able to gain entry to the castle before the warning bells even start. Helios awakens Morgana, and they go to greet her dear brother home. Arthur and the knights fight their way to the throne room. Percival makes his way to the dungeons and breaks out Gaius, Elyan, and Gwaine. Morgana and Helios wait patiently in the throne room for Arthur to enter. She sits there on the throne so eager for him. Arthur approaches her, and asks what happened to her, he thought they were once friends. They have a discussion on whom is closer to being more like their father. Then Morgana tries to use her magic, nothing happens. Merlin smirks he knows what it is. Helios steps in to defend her, while she flees. Arthur orders some to follow her, while he engages Helios and his guards. Merlin goes after Morgana, whom is charging down the hall. Morgana is surprised by a knight and stabbed in the side, though she quickly runs him through, Continuing on. Helios is making quick work of those he battles, he almost slays Arthur when Isolde stabs him in the back, Helios turns quickly stabbing her in return. Down the hall Gwen is also looking for Morgana whom she finds, they confront each other. Morgana wants to kill Gwen and keep her from becoming queen. But Merlin steps in and prevents Morgana from doing so by collapsing the ceiling in front of Morgana separating the two of them. Back in the throne room, Isolde is now dying of her wounds, comforted by Tristan. In this moment, Gwen and Arthur gaze upon each other.
Now with Helios dead and Morgana gone, the kingdom is now reclaimed. Arthur express’s to Gwen that he wants her to stay, that he never wants to lose her. Arthur again proposes marriage to Gwen and she accepts. Soon they are wed, Gwen is crowned the Queen of Camelot. She is finally married to her beloved King Arthur. The Kingdom of Camelot rejoices, long live the Queen.
Though unknown to anyone is Morgana, injured and fleeing through the woods. She seeks to leave and save herself. Though her wound prevents her of such, she collapses. When suddenly Aithusa lands and breathes on her, healing the injured Morgana, then fly’s away.
What an ending to a great season, I can’t believe its over already. Through this season Arthur and Gwen have learned a lot and overcome much. It was great in the end seeing them after all these many seasons, to finally be together! What a moment for them, I just loved the crowning ceremony, Gwen was just stunning! But the most shocking moment was with little baby dragon Aithusa! Could not believe she did that for Morgana of all people. Now you know when the Great Dragon finds out he is going to be furious with Aithusa. We all know he wants the witch dead. But here is what I am thinking on that. Did Aithusa know who Morgana was and choose to save her, putting herself against the Great Dragon. Or was Aithusa just being a good little dragon and thinking oh here is just someone that needs help and healed her. Could go either way, but which ever we will still have a vengeful Morgana back for the next season of Merlin. What are your thoughts on what Aithusa did? Do you think that Arthur during the next season will make steps to mend relations with the Druids? Or his opinion be changed on magic?
Just a heads up, but there will be a season 5 of Merlin. It is currently being filmed in the UK. No news yet on any release dates for the UK or USA.
