Robot and Frank – Old School Meets High Tech In Buddy Heist Dramedy

By | Posted on 26 June 2012

Robot and Frank is part buddy comedy, part old style heist, and all heart.  The story takes place in the near future and revolves around Frank (Frank Langella), an aging former jewel thief whose memory is beginning to fail him.  His son, played by James Marsden, decides to give him a caretaker robot to look after him and keep him occupied.

It must be noted that Frank is by no means an invalid and can pretty much take care of himself, but the combination of living alone and old age causes him to get a bit “fuzzy” at times.  He still gets around and even has eyes on the local librarian, played by Susan Sarandon.  This is a man still living a full life, he just needs a little help now and then.

Well, Frank may be old and subject to lapses in memory, but he’s still got a bit of mischief inside.  He hatches a plan with his new best friend, Robot, to pull off a jewelry heist, one would assume as a “last hurrah” to relive his glory days.  What follows is a funny and heartwarming tale of friendship with a little romance and thievery thrown in for fun.  Winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize – 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Robot and Frank is scheduled for release on Friday, August 24, 2012.

Set in the near future, Frank, a retired cat burglar, has two grown kids who are concerned he can no longer live alone. They are tempted to place him in a nursing home until Frank’s son chooses a different option: against the old man’s wishes, he buys Frank a walking, talking humanoid robot programmed to improve his physical and mental health. What follows is an often hilarious and somewhat heartbreaking story about finding friends and family in the most unexpected places. Robot & Frank features an award winning cast including Academy Award® nominee Frank Langella, James Marsden, Liv Tyler and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon. Robot and Frank is a Samuel Goldwyn Films and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions film.

Editor for Three If By Space. Tom first became interested in science fiction & science as a very young child thanks to his parents. His earliest memories of enjoying scifi were sitting with his dad watching first-run episodes of the original Star Trek. Although a rabid fan of nearly all forms of scripted television, some of Tom’s favorite shows are Firefly, Falling Skies, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, the X-Files and all versions of both Star Trek and Stargate. He also has a particular love for British television and dearly hopes to one day visit the UK.
