Comic Con News: Show Creator Eric Kripke talks Revolution

By | Posted on 19 July 2012

Coming this fall to NBC, Revolution is a show about survival after all the power in the world goes out and how humanity grips with this new reality. The show creator, Eric Kirpke, sat down with us to discuss the show and give us some insight into this plans for it. For nearly 5 years Eric was the show runner in charge for the TV series Supernatural and many believe that show was not the same without him. So what does he bring to Revolution?

Lets start with a short preview of Revolution and a short synopsis of the show.

Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why? Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it? On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.

Eric has been told many times, that he has an obsession with apocalyptic stories and was asked why that is. He mentions that while that may be true of past shows he has done, he feels this one is more of an anti-apocalypse story. During our chat with Eric, he described the mythology behind the story.

While looking for an idea for the story, they came up with the idea to just flip all the power off, and what that would be like for the world to have to adapt to having none of the modern luxuries we have today. The ‘rule’ of the of the show, one that he has always followed, as any good fantasy is 98% reality and has 1 element that is extraordinary. In the case of Revolution its the fact that electricity has stopped running in anything that makes a spark or has a circuit. The reason is not known right away but they will slowly reveal that throughout the series.

When asked about his infamous 5-year plan for Supernatural, he was asked what his plan was for Revolution. He commented that he wouldn’t state how many years he was planning but that he had not just the ‘country’ that the story was set in, but in his mind there are many other countries and overseas that, god willing, they will get to explore.
