Since Dark Horse Comics first announced Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories I have been excited. For a while now I’ve felt the need for a new modernized telling of a superhero tale and the way The Victories was being approached made me hopeful that this was exactly that sort of tale. One issue in, it certainly seems it is.
The Victories #1 kicks off right away with the same Watchmen feel I was hoping for splayed out on the sidewalk and narrative text right then and there.
It goes on to tell the story of a needful city and the creatures and beings who call it home. It’s a rough, dirty, and dark tale. An adult tale. A fun tale, and I enjoyed every page.
Both written and arted by Oeming it was clear he had a vision and Dark Horse let him take it there for all of us to see and enjoy. To immerse ourselves in the art and text completely as Oeming takes us on the wild journey through his twisted but delightful character’s lives.
So, if you enjoy visceral action narratives and banter wrought with dark art and colorful language, this is clearly the comic for you. Obviously I quite do, and can’t wait for issue two. -N
PS- If you don’t however, prepare to be disturbed. Very disturbed.
