UPDATE: Syfy, Hulu Acquire Primeval: New World – via Deadline

(Excerpt from Syfy’s press release follows at end of this article)

File this under “Good news/Bad news” at least for those of us in the US.  The British series Primeval is getting a spin-off called Primeval: New World.  The series will air on Canada’s Space, UK’s Watch, Germany’s ProSieben, and Syfy France.  (Wait…Syfy France, but not Syfy ‘Merica?)  Hopefully that’ll change soon enough, (See link to Deadline above!) but no US distributor has been announced as of this writing.  There will be some familiar faces on both sides of the camera.  Stars of the show include Niall Matter (Eureka) and Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries).  Among the directorial line-up are Amanda Tapping, Andy Mikita and Martin Wood.  With names like these this show has a great pedigree.

For those of you unfamiliar with Primeval, and shame on you, the series was about a team of scientists who investigated randomly occurring time-portals they dubbed “anomalies.”  Emerging from these anomalies were usually prehistoric creatures the team would have to contain and hopefully return through the anomaly then attempt to close the troublesome hole in time.  To make matters worse, or better in the case of entertainment value, some anomalies were connected to the future and some scary-weird things came out of them to be sure.

Image courtesy Canada's Space NetworkIn the original Primeval the base of operations was called the ARC, which stands for Anomaly Research Center.  In Primeval: New World their base is called the TANK.  I’m assuming it’s also an acronym, but so far I’ve been unable to find out what it stands for.  No matter, it’s a cool looking place where neato whiz-band scientific research and dino-butt-kicking gadgets can be found.  Just look at the picture and tell me you wouldn’t want to work there.  Okay, so it’s one shot of a very small part of the TANK, but it beats the average cubicle.

His earliest memories of enjoying scifi were sitting with his dad watching first-run episodes of the original Star Trek. Although a rabid fan of nearly all forms of scripted television, some of Tom’s favorite shows are Firefly, Falling Skies, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, the X-Files and all versions of both Star Trek and Stargate. He also has a particular love for British television and dearly hopes to one day visit the UK.
