Syfy’s latest new series plans to break all the rules of TV by trying to link together a TV series with a video game. A tie in like this on face value seems like a complete bust. However, with so little original scripted science fiction shows left on Syfy’s schedule they have no choice but to go big or go home. Currently Syfy only has 3 scripted shows to its name that isn’t reality TV, and they are Warehouse 13, Haven and Being Human. With Haven over for the season and Warehouse 13 not even starting up yet, Syfy had to bring in several shows from other countries to fill in the gaps. Merlin from the UK, Lost Girl and Continuum from Canada, all excellent shows, and none Syfy shows.

The goal was simple, create a show in which players of the game can interact with the story and watch some of the outcomes from within the game flesh out on screen. Its a bold attempt by Syfy and its one that, if they make it work, will pay off big time. Checkout how Trion plans on making this tie in work.

While there are many videos that go into the work behind the scenes the most interesting for me is the makeup and culture video. In this video you get a deeper understanding of all work that goes into building a world with so many alien races while not seeming superficial or lacking in detail. The creation of several new languages is also a feat that is not easily overcome. Checkout Part 4 of behind the scenes.

Defiance hits both the gaming shelfs, online and on TV in April. Our dedicated video designer and writer Rose will be covering the entire series for you and we will offer you some insight and a review of the series as soon as we screen it. In the mean time, enjoy these 3 new trailers and tell us what your thoughts are on Syfys bold attempt at a unique science fiction show.
