Season 3 – Unanswered Questions

Even though the season didn’t end with a new alien race or someone getting on to an alien ship, it did end with a lot of open questions we will need answered in season 4.

Are Anne and Lexi really Anne and Lexi?

After watching the finale more than once, I thought to myself, what if Anne and Lexi are not really Anne and Lexi? There is a method to my madness. The Espheni are very good at deception and it’s clear that Karen had something to say about the Volm but Tom could not resist shooting her. With all the technology they have, it is conceivable that they could have cloned Anne and Lexi and used dopplegangers to infiltrate the 2nd mass. An interesting observation is Dr. Kadar’s comments to Tom at the end of the finale about Lexi. Dr. Kadar always referred to Anne as Dr. Glass. However, in his conversation with Tom he called her Anne. Perhaps an indication they may not be human. Only time will tell us for sure.

What did Karen want to tell Tom about the Volm?

We have seen Karen with a white flag before and I would have been in the same boat with Tom having guns pointed at her from the moment she arrived. However, you could tell in her voice that something was different. She seemed genuinely upset over the arrival of the Volm ship and had something important to tell Tom. Sadly given all the pain and suffering caused by Karen, Tom decided to ask questions after she was dead. What intel did Karen have for the 2nd mass? Was that their last hope of learning more about the Volm?

Why do the Volm want humans out of the way?

Cochise’s father made it clear he does not like native species getting into the way of their war machine. In talking with his son, he mentions the previous planets that they liberated and their relocations. Just what do the Volm have planned for our planet? Does their method of war result in a planet which can no longer support life? Or are they trying to hide something else and they want to keep prying eyes away from their work.

What repercussions will keeping their spikes have on Ben, Denny and other harnessed kids?

Season 3 was very light on the mythology surrounding the harnesses and we have not fully learned what it means for spiked kids or ultimately what the Espheni are doing with those still harnessed. We do know that a select few are like Karen and able to integrate the harness wholly and results in complete control by the Espheni, a transformation of sorts. Ben and Denny were given a chance to de-spike but considered the benefits having them meant for the war effort and decided to keep them. However, Lourdes explained that over time, they will likely die from its effects on their body. But knowing Lourdes is the mole, was she lieing or holding back? What might Ben and Denny turn into if they don’t do something about their spikes? Could the Volm use the spiked kids in their war effort as pawns?

Will the 2nd mass move on from Charleston?

The season ends right where the 2nd mass began in season 2, on the move and nomadic. Too many shows keep put in one spot and end up losing viewers who don’t want them stuck in one place. Great story telling must allow for new backdrops and locations. Will the 2nd mass go back to Charleston and remain there as they attempt to fight along side the Volm? Or will they move on to get as far away from the Volm as they can and find a new places to stage their fight?

Season 4 – Story Arc’s and Mythology

Return to key character growths

Season 3 saw the growth and expansion of several characters that we didn’t see in season 1 or 2 and a lack of development in others. Moving into season 4 there are several characters we would like to see expanded a bit more. Matt had some great expansion this season from an emotional stand point, building on his relationship with his brother Ben. Season 4 needs to up the ante for Matt and put him into a more active role. Anthony had some great scenes in season 3 but there are still a lot we want to know about his character.

As for the other character, there were several that we built up in season 1 and 2 that were not touched in season 3. Ben was a major focus in season 2 and it only made sense that he was not the focus in season 3. However, one must remember that he is apart of the Mason family and as a former captive turned spiked kid, his story is still in many ways the core of the fight against the aliens. He and other harnessed and spiked kids are the reason they are fighting to win the war. Lourdes got some good attention in season 2 and finally at the end of season 3 but there needs to be more. She is by far the most underdeveloped character of the series so far.

What are the Espheni’s end game with their harnessed slaves?

What do we really know of the Espheni’s overall plans for earth and the enslaved human children they have? We know the Volm are chasing them. We know the human children end up mutating into a crusty creature of some kind. We know they are using them as foot soldiers and we know that those whose spikes were kept in gain super-human abilities. However, Karen came to Tom with a white flag and she had something to tell him about the Volm and the fact that they are not the benevolent race they appear to be. What was the Espheni’s game plan and can any of the children harnessed for so long be saved?

Who is the agresser in this war, Volm or Espheni?

We started out thinking the skitters were the enemy in season 1 but quickly learned by the end of the season that they were nothing more than slaves. That didn’t change the fact that they were ruthless and were the face of the aliens who were taking our children. The 2nd mass managed to save some by removing the harness but found that for those that had them too long, like Ben, that there were side effects. Season 2 gave us a closer look at the Espheni and what their goals were with the invasion of earth. We never do get a direct answer but we assume they are the enemy when the Volm arrive in season 3.

The rebel skitters tell Tom and Weaver not to trust in what the Volm tell them. Their ships are in fact coming, but they may not be here to help the humans win the war against the Espheni. So far in season 3, the Volm have done as much as possible to help push back the Espheni war ship. In the finale, we see some push back from the Volm leader when he asks Tom and the 2nd mass to relocate to Brazil to keep them out of harms way. The question is which of the two are the aggressor in this war? Who is after whom and who is truly our ally in this fight.

Another possibility is that knowing which side started it won’t matter. Regardless of what they are fighting for or who started the fight, humanity may find itself in the middle and paying the price. The Espheni have already used human children to boost their army, what will the Volm do with humans in order to win the fight? Will the Volm spare the human slaves who are harnessed or will they use them as pawns?

Continued Biological Evolution of spiked kids

Touched on above is the harness and its effect on the kids who were taken captive by the Espheni. However it’s an important story arc that needs to be addressed more in season 4. In a recent interview Connor Jessup commented that he would like to see some of those consequences for keeping his spikes be addressed on screen. I would also like to see some possible biological warfare on the side of the Volm be used and see how that plays out on screen.

More alien backstory

Coming into season 3 we have had very little backstory on the Espheni and barely touched on the backstory of the skitters. The Volm have given us the most backstory to date but even that has left us with more questions then answers. Moving into season 4, we need to learn more about all the aliens races and the war that is raging between them. Family drama and world building isn’t just a human thing, it can be an alien thing too. The show plays well off the conflict and world building so adding alien to it makes it appeal to more people.

Alien Weaponry

One of the best things to come out of season 3 was alien technology and weapons. Neither side was afraid to use their technology finally and new technology was introduced that was both amazing and creepy. From the Espheni we saw them play heavily with the eye-worms and bio-organic bomb tech used by the mole to destroy Charleston and the Volm complex. From the Volm, they modified all our weapons to use their pulse energy technology making it far more effective against Mega and standard mech assaults. The Volm even gave the 2nd mass a machine to de-harness kids. The skitters brought out a bioweapon used to remove the eye-worms, in a very creepy and horrific scene with Hal.

Moving into season 4 this trend needs to continue and expand to include more weapons for the 2nd mass and a deeper look at how the technology works.
