Game Of Thrones Review – The Laws of Gods and Men

Tonight was all about the trial for Joffery’s murder and the title summed up the ending very well. Tyrion sat through one witness after another who basically told the 3 judges that he threatened to kill everyone at least once, and the king at least 10 times. They even managed to bring Shae up to lie and tell what was a fabricated story. Had Tyrion not outburst at the end, it is possible that Prince Oberin (sp) would have been a voice of reason to doubt the stories they were being told as they were just far too scripted sounding. Of course, who would not listen to Tywin and the Queen and lie under oath? If they didn’t, they would most surely be killed.

In what could be considered an Emmy worthy speech, Tyrion bursts out that he wishes to confess, but not to killing the king. He wishes to confess that he is on trail for being a dwarf and that he wishes he was the monster that everyone is claiming that he is. He was thrilled to see Joffery dead and he saved all their lives at black water but wishes there was enough poison to kill every last one of them. Jamie tried to tell Tyrion before the second half of the trial to keep quiet, he had made a deal that would spare his life and send him to the wall. But Tyrion is far too stubborn to listen to that.  So rather than let the mob decide his fate, he will let the gods decide it and demands a trial by combat.

In Moreen, the mother of dragons is finding that ruling is not what she thought it would be. With over 200 people lined up to ask for permission or forgiveness or blessings from the queen, she is finding her self worn out. However the first person she sees comes to her after her dragons had killed and eaten all of his livestock. They are getting bigger and harder to control, and one has to wonder if she truly has any control over them any more. While it was only livestock now, the boy was close to getting hurt, its only a matter of time before someone does get hurt.

The second man who comes is the son of a master whom she crucified as punishment for the children that they crucified. What she learns about this man, has her a bit taken back. He was actually a voice against this action that they took on the slaves, but she punished him anyways. She attempted to justify her position but it sounded more like she made a mistake and didn’t even realize it. Answering in-justice with justice sounds great on the battlefield but once you are ruling over the city you fought to control, it’s not as easy to say that to your subjects.

Stannis travels to the iron bank in an attempt to gain funds for his effort to take over the throne that is rightfully his. The bank doesn’t care about blood rights and who has claim to the throne. They are all about the numbers and who they feel will most likely repay their debt. The kingdom is greatly in debt at the moment and the iron bank refuses Stannis at first. However his pirate friend manages to talk to the bank about numbers and explains that you have a boy on the throne. The one most likely to take over for the debt is Tywin who is getting old. Stannis is young, experienced and always pays his debts (pointing out the fact that Stannis took his fingers for crossing him). Though it’s not directly shown, it appears they got their money.

The Iron Born along with Theons sister attempt to free him from the Dreadfort, but after breaking in and killing several guards, it is clear that Theon doesn’t remember his true self any more and refuses to go with her. He even bites her wrist and runs back into his cage. She retreats to the boats claiming her brother is dead. I have to give her credit for coming to his aid, after all she all but disowned him previously. I guess ending his penis in a box to them set her off but now, can they do anything to bring him back?
