Falling Skies

Season 4 begins with the 2nd mass back in a bad position with the Espheni as they are attacked on the road home to Charleston. The 5 minute preview released by TNT gives you a glimpse of how the 2nd mass get separated and who doesn’t survive in the first episode of the season. Today we had a chance to catch up with Drew Roy who plays Hal Mason and find out just whats up with Hal in season 4 and what its like having a new show runner.

This is part 1 of our interview. Be sure to stay tuned for part 2 after the season 4 premiere.

Tell us a little about where Hal is and whats going on at the start of season 4.

The characters are all separated at the start of the season. That is one of my favorite parts because we get to see characters interact with each other that normally don’t get to. We find Hal in a prison camp with Weaver, Tector, Tom and Pope. He is trying to figure out how to get out with everyone and find where his brothers and Maggie are. We get to see Hal step into even more of a leadership position because Tom is locked up in isolation. Hal spends his time trying to figure out how to escape and when to escape and how they would make that all possible.

It’s interesting to see Hal and Tector working so closely. And of course we get a Hal/Pope confrontation right away. What can you tell us about this new friendship with Tector and your issues with Pope?

Tector is my right hand man this season. We team up together and he is my partner, my team-mate. As far as everything with Pope, Pope is one of the characters I wish I had more scenes with. I feel like Pope and Hal would have interesting story to tell. As you can see from the opener they disagree in a very intense way and there is a throw down. The story line will continue to progress for the next several episodes. It will culminate in a moment where there is an understanding between the two of them and they understand each other a little more after a tough situation.

So when talking about understanding each other in tough situations, lets talk about the tough situation with Maggie over the love-triangle with your younger bother Ben

When I was first told, first pitched this new story angle, I was not really sure what to think about it. I didn’t think it was right for the character and didn’t understand how they were going to make that work. Most us felt that way at first and we put a lot of attention to it to make sure it worked out well. And I have to say between what we did on set and what the writers did for us on paper, we have a very interesting thing that happens between the three of us. Each character has their own justification for why they are doing what they are doing and its left up to the audience to decide who was right and whose side they are on. It’s a very complicated relationship and it really takes the show a step above. It gives us a very in-depth view of Maggie and where she is coming from. It also gives us a deeper look at Ben as he grows into more of a man. You know Ben has a track record of taking an interest in Hals girls.

Season 4 brings in a lot of new characters. The split of the 2nd mass also allows for new interactions between different characters. Tell us about your favorite new screen partners.

I really liked the Pope and Hal story for season 4, that was a lot of fun. Working with Scarlett who plays Lexi, she is such a complicated character and dictates so much of what happens in this season. Having her around was interesting. We have seen broad strokes of what was happening with Lexi in season 3 but now we get to see directly whats going on with her and that was very fun. At the same time I got to work with Treva Etienne who is Uncle Scott generation 3. He can fix things and he is our new fix it man and we partner up on figuring out how to get out of the prison they are in. And Hal gets his own alien this season, his own Cochise. As Hal continues his leadership role of moving these people from point a to point b, he has the assistant of another Volm named Shak. They don’t see eye to eye on stuff and their relationship has a lot of ground to cover still but it does become a friendship.

In episode 2, Tom is faced with a decision by the Espheni that would change everything for the Mason family. In part 2 of our interview Drew shares some juicy secrets on whether Tom’s decision will come back to haunt him and just what the Espheni have planned for humanity. So what can we share with you now?

It’s a huge shock for some of the characters…….devastating

Don’t forget to check back here after the premiere for the second part of our interview.
