Game Of Thrones Season 4 Finale Review/Recap – The Children

By: Robert Prentice
game of thrones

tonight’s finale was full of death and surprises. As the season wrapped up, tonight was all about the children in more ways than one. Jon Snow meets with Mance to discuss a mutual agreement. After the two exchange a few drinks over the ones they lost, Mance gives Jon a simple choice, let us through the wall and we won’t kill anyone else. Jon doesn’t get time to think when Stannis and his army find their way past the wall and overrun the army beyond the wall. Mance surrenders to them and Jon burns the bodies.

Daenerys finds out that one of her dragons has killed a young girl. She had no choice but to do what she did next. She locked her 2 other dragons up in a dungeon and sealed them away. For how long, we don’t know. Daenerys will need to figure out a way to control her dragons or they will no longer be the asset she was hoping for.

Bran, Jorjen and the others make it to the tree in his visions, only to be attacked by the undead. Skeletons began shooting up out of the snow and ice and attacking them as they attempted to make it to the tree. In a sad and cruel twist, Jorjen ends up getting stabbed over and over and over by a skeleton (whats with Game Of Thrones and the over-stabbing?). A young girl appears out of the cave and expresses the fact that Bran must go with her and they must leave Jorjen, he is a lost cause. All of a sudden she is throwing fire balls at them. She also throws one at Jorjen, likely to prevent him from turning. Whatever power controlled the undead there, couldn’t enter the cave. There Bran finally meets the raven he has been looking for. While he cannot give Bran his legs back, he does promise Bran will fly.

Brianne and Podrick run into Arya and The Hound. Brianne tries to convince her that she owes her mother a promise to protect Arya. Instead The Hound and Brianne get into a fight. When it was all said and done, the Hound lost and fell off a cliff. Arya stayed hidden while Brianne looked for her. The Hound begged for Arya to kill him. Even though he was on her list she decided it would be a fitting punishment for her to rob him and leave him to rot.

In Kings Landing, Cersei will not marry who her father demands and she breaks the news to him that the rumors about her and her bother are true. He was so fixated on his family he blinded himself to that truth. After that Cersei went to Jamie to say she wanted nothing more than to be with him, no matter what anyone else had to say. Jamie goes down into the dungeon and free’s Tyrion with Verys help. But Tyrion won’t leave right away and instead goes to his fathers chambers only to find Shae in his bed calling Tywins name. Tyrion ends up killing Shae for the betrayal.

In a cruel fathers day gift to Tywin, Tyrion finds him in the stall and shoots 2 arrows into him, killing his father. he finally meets up with Varys who stows him away on a ship to get him out. The bells begin to ring, Tywin has been found. Varys joins Tyrion on the ship, perhaps due to the fact that he is no longer safe in Kings Landing. Arya gets to a port asking to go to the wall, but the captain refuses until she pulls out the coin that was given to her previously by a man from Bravos. She recites the saying valor moguls at which the captain understands and agrees to take her where she wants to go.

Overall the finale was excellent. Provided a lot of new stories and some well deserved deaths to even up the playing field for those who have been dealt a shitty hand for several seasons. With 4 major deaths tonight from Jojen, The Hound, Shae and Tywin, season 5 has a lot to live up to. Fans of the book will likely have some issues with the ending, as several key points were not shown that may either be pushed into season 5 or skipped altogether. Either way, it will be interesting to see where Bran’s story goes. I have not read the books but the magic side of Game Of Thrones is starting to come out and I am interested to see where they take it.
