Martin Odum has a problem. Well, actually, a couple of them. He is beginning to realize that he doesn’t have a good hold on who he really is – he can’t remember how he proposed to his wife. He has an over-enthusiastic traffic security agent tailing him. And he’s being forced to kill a man to prove to a weapons dealer that he really is a weapons buyer.

In a continuation of last week’s story, Martin’s legend, Dante Auerbach, is trying to find the maker of the VX gas through the person they believe is selling it, a beautiful Greek woman named Ana Palanos. Through the DCO’s computer-gadget wizardry, they learn who the VX gas’s potential buyer is, and Odum eliminates him by subscribing to the Jack Bauer school of persuasion. Maggie, with her computer abilities, also learns who is making the gas for sale – a Chechen colonel (guest star Necar Zadegan). Under his orders, Palanos approaches Dante about purchasing the gas, and ends up sleeping with him as part of her “vetting process” (yeah, sure, Sean Bean may be all craggy looking, but what self-respecting arms dealer wouldn’t fall for him?).

Martin is cracking up inside, though – he goes to see his ex-wife, looking to see if she can help his shaky self-identity. He can’t remember how he proposed to her – remembering, incorrectly, that a beach was somehow involved; and as Dante, uses the beach story when talking with Ana Palanos, feeding his dissociated personality. The Colonel agrees to pursue the sale of the gas to Dante; he is taken to a meeting. The DCO believes they’ve figured out where the gas is being made and Hubbard is being held, and they enter the warehouse, where they find the Hubbard family, but no gas.

Meanwhile, transportation security agent Tony Rice is still pursuing Martin over the death of the man on the subway platform. Despite being told to drop it by both his boss and Nelson Gates, he continues to pursue his investigation. He goes to talk to Gates, who stonewalls him, but does this convince him that he’s pushing against his paygrade? No! Even his boss tells him to back off. Gates goes to Rice’s home and threatens him with losing his job – this is the type of guy who gets even more stubborn when threatened, I think.

There are two deleted scenes available to watch – one with Ana Palanos and one in Tony Rice’s home – but they’re only available (currently) through Twitter, on @LegendsTNT. They’re interesting, but not necessary – if you’re on Twitter, look them up; if not, you’re not missing any vital pieces to the puzzle.

This show is not high art; it’s not award winning. It is a fairly solid, entertaining show, and if you like James Bond, Jason Bourne, Mitch Rapp and other spy/action thrillers, you’ll probably be willing to overlook the cliches. I’m glad that we didn’t have to see poor Crystal (Ali Larster) tossed into a skimpy dress, or less, again – maybe they’ll start treating her with the respect her character’s position deserves. But with the addition of the identity storyline, this has become more interesting. It’s being introduced slowly – and I expect to see more about Martin’s difficulty figuring out who he is in coming weeks – but the pace works. The little bits of his personality disintegration making it into his legends works. He signs checks with the wrong name, he puts bits of his faulty memories into his legends. Sean Bean is a compelling actor, even if he’s surrounded by several fairly wooden actors (although I do like Steve Harris as Nelson Gates), and carries the show fairly well. Next week’s episode will continue with the Dante Auerbach legend, and I hope they don’t spend any longer than that with Dante – one of the show’s hooks is to see how Martin can transform himself into a number of different characters -but I’ll stay with it! How about you?
