Following his bravura performance at PaleyFest last night, Tobias Menzies chatted it up with fans on Twitter today. Here’s the conversation.
Q Favorite character thus far in your TV/Film/movie history?
A I think I’d have to go with Black Jack. #obvs
Q Has playing Frank made you curious about your own family history? Or do you not want to open that door?
A Having Black Jack on the other side of the door makes you a little nervous. Maybe that’s why I haven’t looked yet.
Q Top question for Tobias’s #Ask Outlander will probably be “What socks are you wearing?”
A These!
Q All the way from Scotland, what did you love most about filming here?
A The people of Glasgow. The rain. The landscape. It feels ancient.
Q Are there any elements of improvisation that you incorporate into your scripted acting?
A No. It’s all very carefully scripted and rehearsed.
Q What do you like to do when you’re not on set?
A Like to walk around Glasgow. Tennis. Cait and Maril have been having lessons.I’m going to have to put them in their place.
Q After Paleyfest and DROWLING, do you feel like this?
A Yes.
Q What has your family thought of your new roles?
A Don’t like Jack, but definitely Frank.
Q How has your real life relationship with Sam Heughan changed after filming Part 2?
A Still give him a wedgie.
Q What is directly on your right?
A A nice glass of sancerre.
Q Have you ever directed, or wanted to?
A Never directed, but would be very interested to.
Q Favorite actor?
A Joaquin Phoenix.
Q What is your favorite booze?
A I’m a wine man.
Q What do you think Frank would have done if it were him going through the stones?
A Not fall in love with Jamie.
Q What convinced you to do Outlander?
A A chance to play two characters and Ron Moore.
Q Who is the person who can make you laugh the most?
A Caitriona.
Q Would you rather be famous, notorious or anonymous?
A Anonymous.
Q What is your favorite book?
A At the moment I’m reading “My Struggle” by Karl Ove Knausgaard. It’s brilliant.
Q Which occupation would you choose? Frank’s or BJR’s?
A Only one of them is legal now, so in order to stay out of prison, Frank’s.
Q What is BJR always chewing on? Gum? Bones? Flesh?
A What’s left of his morality.

Q Where would you like to travel?
A Where would you recommend?
Q Are you an English premier league fan? What team?
A Arsenal.
Q Are there any scenes you’ve filmed that gave you pause/had a difficult time preparing for?
A Obviously the Wentworth stuff.
Diana: The last thing you did with/to Jamie? Creepiest thing I ever saw on screen. #welldone. Simultaneously heart-breaking and stomach-wrenching. You know, the book isn’t really that explicit past the, um, introductory stuff. The show has to be.
Q Will Wentworth be as explicit in detail as the book was?
A Yeah. We’ve been pretty faithful to the book. Should be uncomfortable viewing.
Q Read you prefer not to be in the limelight. If true, how do you feel about the current attention you are receiving?
A It’s a learning curve. NOW GET OUT OF HERE.
Q Would you want to play Alexander Randall also?
A YES!
Q Which is more enjoyable, doing press or going to a dentist?
A Dentist for sure.
Q Do you have a favorite director you’d love to work with?
A Yes. Paul Thomas Anderson.
Q What is your favorite area in the UK?
A My own bed.
Q Do you enjoy doing period/historical based films,etc., as you seem to get so many of these roles?
A Yes, I seem to have a “period face.”
Q Theatre or screen?
A Both! Variety is the spice of life.
Q What’s your favorite movie?
A Synecdoche, New York.
Q Would you rather win an Oscar or have Arsenal win the EPL?
A Oscar for sure. Champagne supporter.
Q Plane? Train? Automobile? Other?
A Motorbike. The only way to travel.
Q My husband thinks I’m working so I can do this instead of rearing our spawn. Shhh. It’s our secret.
A Your secret is safe with me.
Q Cakes or vegetables?
A Vegetables.
Q What makes you decide? A good script or a good director?
A A good script.
