Critics Choice Nominations Announced: Where’s the SciFi?

The Critics Choice Awards, given yearly by the Broadcast Journalists Association, announced nominations today for awards in television. Sad to say, with the exception of Game of Thrones, sci fi and fantasy TV was almost completely ignored – including fan and (we thought!) critical fave Outlander. Nominees for “Most Exciting New Series” will be announced on May 18, but don’t hold your breath, Outlander fans – this is for shows DEBUTING AFTER May 1, 2015. So, I hate to say it, Outlander has been completely shut out of this award program!

Nominations for best drama this year were Game of Thrones, The Americans, Empire, The Good Wife, Homeland, Justified and Orange is the New Black. Comedy nominations included Broad City, Jane the Virgin, Mom, Silicon Valley, Transparent, Veep, and You’re the Worst.

None of the nominated actors or actresses in comedy were in sci fi or fantasy shows (unless you include Big Bang Theory). American Horror Story was nominated in several categories, including Jessica Lange for Best Actress; Finn Wittrock for Best Supporting Actor; and Sarah Paulson for Best Supporting Actress, but no other sci fi or fantasy shows received actor nominations.

Jason Isaacs of DIG was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Limited Series for his performance in Stockholm, Pennsylvania, which will debut on the Lifetime Channel this coming Saturday. (We talked with Jason about this project – you can see Part 1 of that interview here). Cynthia Nixon was also nominated for this film, which doesn’t fit in the sci fi or fantasy series, but we love Jason, so we thought we’d mention it!

To remedy this oversight of such an important genre, Threeifbyspace has their own annual SciFi Awards program. Very soon, we’ll announce our nominations in several categories for our third annual awards, but I’d like to hear from you – what series, movies, or performers in our genre deserve awards? Not just your favorite show – but standouts. There’s lots to choose from – let us know what you think should be nominated! (Nominations will actually be made by our staff, but we’re interested in your suggestions!) To see last year’s winners, click here.

See the entire list of nominees here. The Critics Choice Awards will be broadcast May 31 on A&E.
