SDCC 2015: Lucifer’s Stars and Producers Talk Daddy Issues and The Devil’s Funny Side

Face it, we have a fascination with angels and demons. How many shows can you name that have featured demons and the Devil in the last couple of years? Dominion, the much-lamented Constantine, Reaper… but there’s always room for one more, especially when it looks and sounds as good as Fox’s new show Lucifer.

Stars Tom Ellis (Lucifer) and DB Woodside (the angel Amanadiel) chatted with us about their characters, the choices they have to make, and the appeal  The show’s three executive producers came to San Diego ComicCon recently to talk about the show. Lucifer, set in present-day LA, stars Tom Ellis as an urbane, smooth-talking Devil, tired of dealing with Hell. So he decides to take up residence in Los Angeles. EP Joe Henderson discusses what Tom Ellis brings to the the hour-long show, a mix of comedy and drama, and says it will have mysteries to solve, but it won’t be a “police procedural.”

The show has also gained notoriety because a right-wing Christian mothers group has objected to the show, saying “it glorifies Satan.” Ildy Modrovich, one of the show’s EPs, talks about how any publicity is good publicity. She also talks about how the show will be playful and irreverent, and how lucky they were that Ellis chose Lucifer, from among his many choices of shows to star in.

EP Jonathan Littman says “hijinks will ensue.” He says that Lucifer begins to do good things, “which completely confounds him,” and talks about Chloe, a police detective, who is the only woman who is completely resistant to Lucifer’s charms.
