Supergirl Cast at San Diego Comic Con Part 1

Supergirl Cast at San Diego Comic Con:

Supergirl is the newest super hero television show to hit the CBS network, this time with a strong female lead and a newer twist on the Supergirl lore. Melissa Benoist, are leading lady, is strong new face in the acting world showing her chops in shows such as Glee and Homeland. So far the cast have only filmed the first episode and read the first two scripts, so they are keeping everything very secretive!

The pilot looks stellar, and everyone is excited to be able to show the world what they’ve worked on. During our round table at San Diego Comic Con we got to chat with Melissa Benoist who plays Supergirl, David Harewood, who plays Hank Henshaw, Chyler Leigh, who plays Supergirl’s sister Alex Danvers, and writers Andrew Kreisber and Ali Adler.

Melissa Benoist talks about her life as a young girl growing up as a pacifist and how she’s pretty excited to show off her butt-kicking abilities. She also discussed how she was ready to take on what it means to be such a strong female role model. She said “You have to make sure that you’re the person you looked up to when you were little.” We discussed that she was never too much of a comic book reader, but as soon as she got the role she started reading some of the New 52 and some of the older generation stories.

She says they’re keeping it very cannon, but also creating their own story with the character and giving her a fresh start.  Benoist is excited about the villains that she may face and flying. Melissa said “I love a good challenge and I knew this was going to be a good challenge and a lot of responsibility. I also love that this is going to be something that I think will bring a lot of hope and positivity and a good influence.” I know I’m excited to see her in action!

Chyler Leigh plays Alex Danvers, Supergirl’s sister.  She grew up reading comics with her brother and is excited and honored to be a part of such a great project.  As a mother of two daughters she feels that having a Supergirl tv show is an appropriate step, seeing as it will be inspirational to women of all ages.  She also told a cute anecdote about her son switching gears from reading all Marvel comics and transitioning into DC once his mom landed the role.

Like Benoist, she’s excited for the butt-kicking and how much it’s going to shine during this show.  Alex Danvers is a brand new character in the Supergirl lore and Leigh is looking forward to being able to make something new in the already large story.  The only thing the writers have told her about the upcoming season is that she gets to do a lot of “exciting stuff” and hopes that Supergirl will take her flying!

Stay tuned for part two with Jeremy Jordan and David Harewood!
