I’ve been reading the Outlander books since the early 2000s, when a friend back home in New Zealand recommended them to me. After finishing the first one, I immediately went out and bought the series and devoured them as quickly as I could. I moved to the States back in 2008 and they were the only books I bought with me.

In recent years I knew I wanted to make jewelry of some kind, but I had no idea where to start. When the TV series was in the works, I realized there was a huge following developing on Facebook of all places. Then I had one of those moments of clarity and thought I could join my passion for Outlander and my yearning to make jewelry together. Outlander had provided the inspiration I’d been looking for.

I make charm bracelets, kilt pins, bookmarks, earrings, key chains, wine charms and other things, all Outlander themed. I like the clean lines of Swarovski crystals and use them along with Swarovski crystal pearls, Celtic symbols and charms to represent various parts of the Outlander story.

I think people can identify with most of the charms straight away, and they can customize anything to use the charms and beads that mean the most to them and the journey they’ve shared with Jamie, Claire and the Fraser-MacKenzie clan. So far I’ve only made Outlander-inspired pieces, but I’m very interested in wedding jewelry and will start thinking about designs in the new year, Celtic themed of course to start with.

I love how one person’s vision has sparked the creativity of so many.

Sassenach Cowls

Everything about Outlander inspires me. I read the books when they were first published, and more than once, since then. I was very excited to know they planned to make it into a miniseries. I, like many others, was nervous about who they would choose to play Jamie, but I am definitely a fan of Sam.

I started knitting in March of 2014, and long time knitters told me that I must have knitted in another life, as I took to it so easily and fully. So, when I started watching the series and saw the lovely knitted wear, I was thrilled. I had to make the Claire Cowl! I then started to show it to some people in my community and they wanted to buy them. I made the Facebook page, so they could see pictures, and fewer than 24 hours later, I had 50+ likes! A friend had shared my page in the Outlander Series Facebook Group, which kick started Sassenach Cowls. I have also made the Castle Gauntlets and the Rent Shawl, but only for personal use. The cowls are the only Outlander inspired item that I sell. Items sell for $20-$49.

I also sell some hats and a unisex neck warmer, and after becoming a grandmother at the end of July this year, I started selling baby clothes too.
(see these here). I think Facebook is the best way to see all of my work. Etsy limits the number of photos. I prefer to sell from Facebook, through PayPal. I think I can charge less for shipping that way.

Tag Your “It”

I have been making jewelry for 4 years. I am a Registered Veterinary Technician by trade, but wanted the flexibility of working from home, so I learned to metal stamp by tons of research and hundreds of hours of YouTube videos. Outlander has been an inspiration for me since the first time I read it in 2001. Now, 14 years and after countless rereads, I am still in awe of the love story, the strength of the characters, and of course, the Highlander hotness that is JAMMF. There are so many great quotes written by Diana Gabaldon, that I couldn’t help but put them into metal. I strive to keep my pieces different from other stampers and jewelry makers on the market by using varying techniques such as Precious Metal Clay, etching and of course, metal stamping.

I do create pieces that are not Outlander related. Again, I try to mix things up with different metals and techniques to not only keep original designs, but keep my life interesting.

Imperial Bracelets

I make Outlander themed bracelets, earrings and bookmarks. I also make other bracelet and earrings or any other bookmark variations. I’ve had a lot of requests for the cancer ribbon bracelets lately, especially for breast cancer awareness month.

As far as Outlander inspiring me, I’ve been a fan for 12 years. Diana’s writing is so seamless that you just fall into the story and it really seems all possible. I wanted a love like that. Not mushy romance novel love but real love with the disagreements and everything. Outlander was a comfort for me when I was going through a rough patch with my own health. I could escape in the books…and today I still escape. I love to spread the OL love and making items for those that love the books is the best way for me to do that.
