Shadowhunters 105 Review: ‘Moo Shu to Go’ is One Heck of a Takeout!

‘Moo Shu to Go’ is one heck of a takeout for Clary and Simon in Episode 5 of Shadowhunters!

As this is my first post on threeifbyspace.net, I’ll start by saying ‘Hi!’ There is more about me, & my contact details at the bottom of this post.

I must confess: I haven’t read the books. So: I won’t be making book/show comparisons. I have watched the movie: ‘The Mortal Instruments’, though, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m so glad they’ve made this show, because I get to see the story in so much more detail. Also, I personally prefer Katherine to Lily as Clary. This show is awesome!

The Jade Wolf. A great place for takeout! Right?

So, what you came here for, the episode itself:

If you’ve watched the episode: you know what happened. (So much!) If you haven’t, there’s a link at the bottom of this post for the official episode recap with all the details!

There are exciting revelations every episode, as we, with Clary, find out more about the Shadowhunter’s world, her parents and the many, many things that Clary had no idea about before now.

This episode, the biggest surprise for me wasn’t Vampires or Werewolves or Seelies, or any of the incredible powers that these beings have, but it was the arrival of Alec and Izzy’s mother! Although I was wondering where the ‘grownups’ were, and why Alec was in charge of The Institute, I really didn’t expect his mother, Maryse Lightwood, to arrive! Maryse certainly made an impression on Clary, not least of all because of her commanding, authoritative presence, but also because of the way that she treated her three children: Alec, Izzy & Jace. She was scornful to Izzy, reprimanded Alec for not being good enough, and didn’t hug either of her biological children, but then hugged Jace with great affection! Favourites, much?!

Maryse had arrived via portal from Idris: there’s a secret country for Shadowhunters! Wow! It also makes it more impressive that Alec is in charge of the Institute, when he’s only about 20-ish years old, if there is a whole country full of other Shadowhunters to choose from. These are hints of more to come beyond what little Clary knows so far: a way of life and people she’s yet to know.

Of course, the box with ‘J.C.’ that Clary retrieved from the loft still needs to be explored. They kind of got sidetracked! Was that a silver baby’s rattle inside? Let’s hope we find out all about the box next episode! I have a feeling it’s going to be huge!

The mysterious box. It made no sense to Clary, so far. Can't wait to find out what it means!

Clary discovers that the necklace that Jocelyn gave her is a portal shard, and not only can Clary see through it to her mother, but Valentine can see and hear Clary! Not surprisingly, Alec takes the necklace and locks it away, so that Valentine can’t see what’s happening at the Institute. Clary is understandably upset: the necklace was a gift from her mother! She realises the danger, though, Valentine can see through the necklace to find the Mortal Cup that he so desperately wants and that the Shadowhunters need to keep from him.

Speaking of Valentine: we see why he wanted that blood, and some of its effects. We start to really understand why people are so afraid of Valentine. Clary’s dad is really NOT a nice guy!

Luke, the father figure in her life for so long, has also disappointed Clary recently. He seems not to be as nice as she always thought.

It’s been clear that he’s helped raise Clary. His boss even told him to marry Jocelyn, because he was acting like her husband!

But, in the earlier episode, when Clary overheard Luke tell two Circle members that he didn’t care about Jocelyn and Clary, and that he just wanted to find the cup, Clary lost her trust in him.

We find out a lot more about Luke this episode, at the Jade Wolf. My favourite line was when Luke found Clary: “You know you can’t cast spells with that thing,” as she pointed her stele at him, the end glowing. A nod to the Harry Potter fandom, perhaps? Hilarious! But: After all that happened this episode, what will happen to Luke now?

I think we all understand Simon’s “cold”, but the real question is: what will this mean in the future? Izzy seems to have taken a liking to him, but I doubt that her mother would approve. Izzy rescues Simon again this episode, but I wonder how much longer she’ll need to do that?
