FOX Announces New Shows, Offers Trailers

Fox Network announced its upcoming fall and winter TV lineup today, including three shows that may be of interest to sci fi fans, Making History, The Exorcist, and Sons of Zorn.

Making History is a time-traveling comedy, starring Adam Pally and Yassir Lester as, well, a doofus and a professor who find a way to time travel. Pally, the doofus, convinces Lester to join him because he needs more information about Revolutionary War-era America. He’s found a girlfriend, Paul Revere’s daughter (Leighton Meester), who outclasses him in every way possible. From the trailer alone, viewers are in for bathroom and slave humor; I predict a quick send-off to the Jurassic era, where they should be very glad they don’t have TV sets. Making History will debut midseason.

The second new genre entry shows much more promise. The Exorcist, based on the head-turning and peasoup-spitting films, follows “two very different priests tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession”, according to Fox. The show stars Oscar winner Geena Davis as the mother, Angela, and Brianne Howey (Scream Queens), and Hannah Kasulka as her daughters. Angela has been plagued by recurring nightmares, each more frightening than the last, and Kasulka hears strange noises from inside the walls. Get more details here. The Exorcist will be shown on Friday nights starting in the fall.

Another genre show, Sons of Zorn, is a live action and animated hybrid featuring the voice of Jason Sudeikis. Upon arriving home on Earth for the first time in 10 years, Zorn, a fully animated, legendary warrior, finds that reconnecting with his live-action son, Alan, and ex-wife, Edie, while suffering through a mundane office job and the banality of suburban life, is harder than waging actual war in his distant, mystical homeland of Zephyria. Can’t say I hold out much hope for this, despite the talented Sudeikis and the participation of another one of my fave SNL performers, Tim Meadows. Here’s the trailer:

  • Pitch (midseason): A young female pitcher defies the odds when she becomes the first woman to play in the major leagues.
  • Shots Fired (midseason): An expert investigator digs into a series of racially charged shootings in a small Tennessee town. • Star (midseason): Four young women with dreams of making it big in the entertainment industry are faced with big choices along the way, which showcase the allure and heartache of the cutthroat music scene, and explore cultural themes from a new perspective.
