Best Anime of Fall 2016 – Our Top 3 Picks

By: Robert Prentice
anime Crunchyroll Funimation

It’s that time of year again and we break down our top picks for best anime of the Fall 2016 season. Coming off a pretty good Spring and Summer season, we are excited yet again for another great selection of shows this fall. In fact, for those of you who have followed my previous best of posts, you will notice that this fall we have shows on our list that are not within our normal genre picks.

As always there will be those who disagree with our picks, and there are certainly more great anime then we can fit in one post. So comment below and tell us your top 3 picks from this fall.

91 Days

There is no debate over subs and dubs with this show. You absolutely must watch this show dubbed from Funimation. Why? The voice actors are not only great but they also worked incredibly hard to provide us with authentic accents and dialect that make it truly feel like a prohibition era crime drama. Tyler Walker, ADR Director, has done an incredible job directing the voice cast and creating a world that benefits immensely from the english dub.

Prohibitiona time where law holds no power, and the mafia prowls the streets. Avilio Bruno has grown up alone in this murky world after the Vanetti’s murdered his family. One day, he receives a letter that holds the key to revenge. Befriending the don’s son, Nero, Avilio works his way through the Vanetti family and sets his vengeance in motion. But 91 days of killing can only spawn more tragedy.

Yuri!!! On Ice

My followers by now know my personal preferences which are mecha and scifi style anime. Sports anime almost never interest me but something about Yuri On Ice changed that a bit. The opening and ending music had a sense of excitement and competition to the series that makes you want to marathon the series. The sub is awesome and the broadcast dub is also great. The leads are voiced by Josh Grelle and Micah Solusod, which are two of my favorite english voice actors. And I again must praise Micah for yet another great Russian accent.

Yuri Katsuki carried the hope of all Japan on his shoulders in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, but suffered a crushing defeat in the finals. He returned to his hometown in Kyushu and hid away in his family’s home, half wanting to continue skating and half wanting to retire. That was when the five-time consecutive world champion, Viktor Nikiforov, suddenly showed up with his teammate, Yuri Plisetsky, a young skater starting to surpass his seniors. And so the two Yuris and the Russian champion Viktor set out to compete in a Grand Prix like none the world has ever seen!

Bungo Stray Dogs – Season 2

The second half of Bungo Stray Dogs started out as a backstory for Dazai and his past with the Port Mafia. I have to say it was far more interesting than a lot of the first half of the series and made for a great watch. Normally flashbacks of this nature don’t turn out well but it sets up a lot of the later episodes in which all out war breaks out. Don’t get me wrong, there are moments when Atsushi is not a whiny bitch but expanding the character depth for the other members of the Agency and Mafia make for a much more fun viewing experience.

Kicked out of his orphanage and on the verge of starving to death, Nakajima Atsushi meets some strange men. One of them, Dazai Osamu, is a suicidal man attempting to drown himself in broad daylight. The other, bespectacled Kunikida Doppo, nervously stands by flipping through a notepad. Both are members of the “Armed Detective Agency” said to solve incidents that even the military and police won’t touch. Atsushi ends up accompanying them on a mission to eliminate a man-eating tiger that’s been terrorizing the population.
