Tonight we finally got to see Emerald City in a two hour premiere showing the first two episodes and it didn’t disappoint.
It was fun to watch and try to figure out what characters are supposed to mirror the characters from the original Wizard of Oz. Despite the fact that most similarities have been changed in one way or another for this story, they are there to be found and are still distinguishable.
There is Toto, a beautiful German Shepherd police dog. The ruby slippers appear as the gorgeous golden gloves with rubies set in them. The scarecrow is one of the Wizard’s guard who has been tortured and Dorothy finds him up on a pole that looks a bit like a cross with a few crows on it picking at him. Instead of the house landing on the witch it is the police car that Dorothy was inside of when the tornado took her to Oz. The yellow brick road is a brick road with poppy pollen all over it making it gold. It will be interesting picking out all the similarities between the originals and this one.
When Dorothy finds the man who seems to be the scarecrow she works to get him down and is determined to help him and heal his wounds. It looks like they will be companions throughout the show, he has no memory and doesn’t know his name. Dorothy calls him Lucas.
He was injured quite badly when she found him with a deep wound in his side. After they have walked for a bit he is clearly in quite a bit of pain.. Dorothy finds a woman who is known as an apothecary, hoping to get help for Lucas’ injuries. This woman has a boy locked in a room, she is giving him “medicine” to keep him calm because he has some sort of illness. He has been trying to escape with the help of another boy. While Dorothy is in the house helping Lucas she discovers the boy and helps him escape. The boy and his friend run away into the woods. In the morning the boy who was imprisoned has disappeared and in his place is a beautiful young woman. I believe she was being kept there and medicated with something that was keeping her looking like a young boy.
The Wizard is not nice, he is dark and a coward. I found him to be egotistical, full of bluster and pompous. . He is afraid of the witches and is doing what he can to sabotage them and to get the people to be afraid of them. There are similarities between this wizard and the original, but this wizard has a lot more to hide and has a very dark side to him, he should not be trusted.
There is a lot going on that I don’t quite understand yet. There are characters whose roles in the story are not clearly defined yet. I can’t help but wonder if this is another show that will keep us on our toes feeding us bits and pieces of the puzzle until we finally put it all together.
Tune in again next Friday January 13th at 9/8c to watch Emerald City.
