The Walking Dead ‘Episode 204: Cherokee Rose’ Review
The legend of the Cherokee Rose is that when the Trail of Tears started in 1838, the mothers of the Cherokee were grieving and crying so much, they were unable to help their children survive the journey. The elders prayed for a sign that would lift the mother’s spirits to give them strength. The next day a beautiful rose began to grow where each of the mother’s tears fell.
This is a very appropriate story. Think about it. Our clan of survivors have been ripped from the day to day mundane lives they knew and thrown into this hell of an existence where grieving is now the norm. On their journey to find a place where they belong, they have lost many. Every imaginable loss you can think of, they have been through it. They are still going through it.
In the beginning of this episode we find the survivors reunited at Herschel’s farmhouse. Carl wakes up. Otis gets memorialized. And the search for Sophia continues. Over all nothing very unexpected, kinda one note. Just wait a few moments, it takes an entertaining turn…
The #2 Well
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water… only when they got there they found a swimmer. A nice juicy swimmer who is so waterlogged from being submerged in water for god knows how long, you can barely see any human resemblance left in it. I know, I know… nasty. So, they rig Glenn up and send him down the well to wrangle the swimmer with a rope to be pulled it out, hopefully without contaminating the water supply anymore than it already has been. Great plan right? HA! I swear if I was Glenn, I would definitely be more vocal about being used as bait. They do it to him every damn time. But one thing you can say about our Glenn is he is good at what he does. Despite almost being dinner for the swimmer when the rusty post breaks they were using for leverage, he manages to get the rope around the blob. You would think it would be easy peasy after almost losing Glenn, nope. The swimmer gets hung up on the side of the well. Believe me, it is not a pretty thing to see either. They pull and pull until finally the thing breaks in half. Not an exaggeration… literally snaps in half. His lower body drops back down into the well. T-Dog then takes to bludgeoning the rest of the undead, caving in it’s head. “ A good thing we didn’t do anything stupid, like shoot it.”
Must say, that was the best kill of the season so far.
As the episode continues Glenn and Maggie make a run into town to get supplies from the pharmacy (leads to more than gathering supplies, if ya know what I mean) Daryl finds evidence that could mean Sophia is still alive and close by. Lori has a secret she is depending on Glenn to keep. Daryl brings Carol a Cherokee Rose.
A Father’s Conscious
Rick is feeling a little worried because he lied to Carl earlier about finding Sophia. It’s a ‘small lie’ but still a lie. As he prepares to explain himself to his son, Carl looks at him and says “I know, mom told me.” A very touching moment that leads into a bonding conversation about being in the ‘same club’ the been shot club. Rick gives Carl his hat. Again, a very touching moment.
Soon Rick leaves Carl’s side. We find him alone in a bedroom, taking off his uniform. Lori watches from the doorway as he carefully folds the button up shirt and places it in the drawer. He then takes his badges and places them on top of the shirt. Before he closes the drawer, he sees Lori in the mirror watching him. She walks to him. Slowly she helps him out of his undershirt, exposing the gunshot scar, which is almost in the same place Carl’s scar will be.
“Are you putting them away?” she asks. Rick closes the drawer but does not answer. Lori holds him and kisses his neck and shoulder. “Stay with him a while longer, I‘m going out.” Rick watches her walk out. He looks so tired.
Lori goes outside. She walks into the darkness of the night, carefully looking around to be sure she is alone. Once she is sure, she takes out what Glenn brought back for her. A pregnancy test. She unzips her jeans and proceeds to pee on the test stick. It’s positive.
Not sure how I feel about this. I am not too much of a Lori fan. We’ll just have to keep watching to see how this storyline plays out.
