Merlin – Episode 9 – Lancelot Du Lac
This weeks episode begins with great news! Arthur informs Agravaine that he is going to marry Gwen, no matter what others say he is going to. That is as long as she accepts his proposal. To no surprise to us Agravaine does not want Arthur to marry Gwen, but Arthur will not hear it. So Agravaine runs off to the Lady Morgana with the news. She says she knows exactly how to destroy Gwen and keep her from becoming Queen of Camelot.
Morgana seeks out assistance for her plot via an old disfigured woman in a secluded location. She brings a gift to show her, from her sister, the old woman tells her how to use it to help Morgana’s plan. Morgana then travels to the last of the five gateways that separate our world from the world of the dead. To the Pool of Nymheim, whose waters are as black as night and as still as death itself, she will then cast the coin into its depths and her wish will be granted. The waters soon rumble and bubble after she throws it in, and what comes out is a very much nude Lancelot!! Only problem is he says he is hers to command. Morgana takes him back to her hovel in the forest, to question him. All he knows is that he is hers to command, he remembers nothing. Morgana tells him of Gwen, Arthur and what he needs to do.
Meanwhile, Arthur has prepared a beautiful setup with candles and such in order to propose to Gwen, he asks and she accepts. The traditional tournaments and feasts are held in honor of the upcoming marriage. During the jousting a mysterious rider approaches, revelaing himself as Lancelot. All are in shock at his return, he is welcomed back immediately. He tells his story of how he recalls nothing after the moment he stepped through the vale. He tells of a nomadic people whom found him in the mountains and he traveled with them till his strengths returned, then made his way home. No one objects to his story they are all taken in, and are glad to see him once again. Merlin invites him to stay with him, and they chat. During a conversation with Lancelot, Merlin becomes concerned cause he doesn’t remember that Merlin does have magic. Merlin discusses it with Gaius, they agree it is strange, but to give it time. In the meantime, Agravaine slips away into the night and informs Morgana of their progress. She enchants a bracelet for him to have Lancelot give to Gwen to help matters along. The next morning, Lancelot pays Gwen a visit with the bracelet, and convinces her that it is a token of good fortune from the people that rescued him. She agrees to wear it, thinking it is an innocent gift.
That night at dinner, Merlin asks Gaius about Necromancy, he thinks that that is how Lancelot has comeback to them. Gaius and Merlin follow what the book Merlin has found on necromancy, to discover if Lancelot is himself or not. It is verified that he is not the real Lancelot, and necromancy has been used. Merlin is upset he didn’t want it to be true, now he needs to stop him.
Next day at tournament, Gwen can’t seem to contain her attraction for Lancelot and sneaks into his tent for a interlude. Soon snapping out of it, and runs off. Seems the enchantment has begun to work on her. During a joust, Lancelot proves to be the most noble, he allows Arthur the courtesy of a draw since Arthur had become injured. Gwen then again seeks out Lancelot in his tent, having another interlude with him. That eve in the castle Merlin follows Lancelot, whom is meeting with Agravaine, he informs things are on schedule with Gwen. Merlin follows him afterwords, knocking him down with his magic, only to have Lancelot spring up surprisingly knocking him out with his sword. Agravaine meanwhile, gets Arthur out of bed to show him something. What it is you wonder, it is Lancelot and Gwen in the counsel chambers in a lovers embrace. Arthur walks in observes, and then charges forward with sword battling Lancelot, the two fight it out with, Merlin of course helping with some magic, when Gwen suddenly breaks them up. Both of them are thrown into the dungeons, where Gwen in tears throws off the bracelet he gave her and sobs. The next morning, before the court Arthur, dismiss all of them in order to talk to Gwen alone. She is in tears and he is clearly devastated by her actions. Arthur questions as to what happened, was she lying, had she always loved him? He is so overcome he ever begins to shout. Gwen pleads with that she loves only Arthur, that Lancelot was something of the past. That she doesn’t know what had overcome her, that all she ever wanted was Arthur. But in the end he doesn’t do what would have been done in his fathers day, he doesn’t want her dead. He banishes her from Camelot on the pain of death if she were to return. She must leave at first light.
Merlin wants expose Lancelot for what he really is. But before he has a chance to do so Agravaine pays Lancelot a visit. He has Morgana’s last command for Lancelot. Merlin see’s Gwen off in a painful goodbye. He tries to convince Arthur that it is not to late to bring her back. Arthur says he can forgive Gwen in time, he just can never find it in his heart to trust her again, and he just can’t live like that. Agravaine comes in now, giving the news that Lancelot has taken his own life. Merlin see’s that he has a proper burial as Arthur requested. He uses his magic, causing Lancelot to briefly awaken where he thanks Merlin. He casts the burial pyre adrift and sets it aflame with his magic. Goodbye Lancelot.
The long awaited and anticipated joining of Arthur and Gwen is finally here! I was so excited about them being together finally. Now thanks to Morgana that is all over, seemingly for good, my only hope is that at some point later on, she gets to come back into Arthur’s life. Was a funny episode to watch, good to have Lancelot and Morgana back to also. So what do you all think, will Arthur look for a new queen? Or will Gwen come back into his life later on? Do you want her to come back or glad she is gone?
