Falling Skies Character Profile: Hal Mason

Hal Mason

Tom’s oldest son, Hal, has made his father proud by growing quickly into manhood during the months since the invasion. Before their world was torn apart, Hal was an athletic and popular kid destined for success. Now he fights alongside his father as a member of the 2nd Mass. Although Hal can be impulsive under fire, he proves himself both brave and confident in the field. Having gone to great lengths to rescue his brother Ben from the Skitters, Hal now appreciates how much his family truly means and steps up to help any way he can. He grieves for the loss of his girlfriend Karen, but in a world occupied by hostile aliens, love has to come second to basic survival.

Hal wasted no time stepping up to help out in the fight as best as he could. Much to Tom’s dislike, Hal became one of the top fighters in the 2nd mass and a very talented recon scout. Much of Hals drive though started prior to his family joining up with the 2nd mass. Just after the invasion Hal and his family were hiding out trying to keep a low profile so as not to be seen by the aliens. Not long after the invasion Tom’s wife was killed while going out looking for food with Dr. Harris. This loss was especially hard on Matt, Ben and Hal. About a month after the invasion Hal and Ben got into a fight and later that day Hal would never see Ben again, as he was taken and harnessed by the skitters.

Hal felt a sense of personal responsibility for getting Ben back, the fight they had was nasty and he didn’t want to leave things the way they were. It would be 6 months before Hal would see Ben again and have the chance to get his brother back. When it comes to family, Hals disciple goes out the window and he becomes a very reactionary person, much to his own danger. Hal wants to run head first into a group of mechs and skitters to save his brother but is stopped by his father, urging Hal to wait until they have a plan in place.

Another thing Hal is good at is getting the attention of the girls. An athlete and all around popular guy before the invasion, Hal remains a magnet for increasingly single group of girls in the 2nd mass. His steady girlfriend is Karen, a solider herself and part of the recon group Hal is in. Lourdes also has her eye on Hal but Karen makes it clear that Hal belongs to her. But in a post-alien invasion love doesn’t last long, as it is replaced with loss.

During a mission to recover one of the harnessed kids, Karen and Hal are knocked out by a mech. When Hal awakens he sees to harnessed kids, one of them Ben, dragging Karen away. Hal attempts to get up to run but a mech and skitter are behind him with the rest of the kids from Ricks group (the kid they saved) all lined up. The skitter orders the kids killed in front of Hal to send a message.

Hal is both upset and worried over the recent events. He wants desperately to save Ben but is getting held back by everyone in the 2nd mass. That is until Weaver, having rejected Toms plan, listened to Hals and liked it. Hal was going to put on the harness removed from Rick and pretend to be one of the kids and walk right in to where they were keeping Ben and get him out. Weaver liked the stealth approach to the plan. But there was still the issue of killing the skitter without alerting nearby mechs.

Dr. Glass has an idea for that. Dr Harris had explained before his death that there was a soft palate in the roof of their mouth and inside were all the nerve bundles. A quick strike to that would kill a skitter quick and quietly. The mission is a go and Hal goes head first into the skitter nest saving Ben and the other kids. Hal thought he would be happy with Ben back, but something wasn’t right, Ben just wasn’t the same once he awoke. Hal not only had to start worrying about his duties but now he had to watch his brother.

One of the best traits Hal has is his ability to sense things and listen to his gut. He knows when something isn’t right and when Clayton took all the kids to the farm, his quick actions along with Ricks father, helped save all of them from being handed over to the skitters like lambs. At the end of the season, after a failed attempt on the alien structure, Hal is sent back to the 2nd mass which had just survived a mech attack. Tom goes back to find Weaver and ends up making a life changing choice to board the ship to protect Ben.

Hal Mason – Season 2

With Tom gone now for 3 months, Hal has had to take over a leadership role in the 2nd mass and act as a father figure to his 2 younger brothers Matt and Ben. However, with Bens increased strength and hatred towards the skitters, Hal and Ben butt heads along the way. In a recent interview with Drew Roy, he talks about a scene you will see in the premiere where Hal and Ben face off for the first time on screen.

In the season premiere there is a scene where Ben and I get into it with each other and I go at him to hit him and with his bare hands he takes me to my knees with zero effort, right in front of my girl (Maggie) and its a very embarrassing scene for Hal.

Hal loves his brother and despite Ben’s disobedience to orders, Hal still does everything he can to protect and defend his brother from those who distrust him and also tries to get Ben to open up about the changes he is going through. Hal’s new leadership and the extended loss of Karen has resulted in a new love interest for him, Maggie. We will see this relationship grow in interesting and unexpected ways as both fight to survive in an alien invaded world.

Drew Roy

DREW ROY is certainly one of Hollywood’s young male actors to watch. Recently, he was seen on the big screen playing the role of Seth Hancock alongside Diane Lane and John Malkovich in SECRETARIAT.

Roy has captured the hearts of many young ladies with his significant arc in the final season of HANNAH MONTANA playing the love interest of MILEY CYRUS. Additional credits include guest starring roles on GREEK, LINCOLN HEIGHTS and iCARLY.

Roy was discovered at an event in Atlanta where he decided to pursue an acting career full time. He made the move to Los Angeles, along with five of his best friends, who were in a band. Although his friends became disenchanted with the lifestyle in LA, ROY was determined to “make it” in Hollywood and persevered the initial loneliness and held onto the belief in his talent and work ethic. With this kind of tenacity, he focused on acting classes and with some luck and a lot of preparation, he is able to do what he loves for a living. He resides in Los Angeles.
