I have to admit when I heard this movie was coming out I was a bit confused. Didn’t we just have a few Spider-Man movies? Why the reboot?
Honestly, I still don’t get it. I love Tobey Maguire in the role and loved Spider-Man 1 to 3 and was looking forward to Spider-Man 4 coming out. I thought the franchise was still going strong and had no need for a reboot.
The Amazing Spider-Man takes you back to the storyline of how Peter Parker got his powers. As the reboot has a new director (Marc Webb), it has a new interpretation, which makes it a different movie that could still be worth the trip to the theater to see.
The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero. ~ The Amazing Spider-Man’s official site

To be honest, I have never read the Spider-Man comics. As such there is an entire Spidey-world that is completely foreign to me. What I know, and what I assume many know, about Spider-Man stems from the movies, so I can’t say if this new interpretation will vary much from the comics, but it does sound like an interesting take on the Spider-Man franchise. Maybe a reboot will be a good thing, though I’ll probably still think of Tobey Maguire when I think of Spider-Man.
