It’s been in the works since June 2010 and we’ll have to wait until August 23, 2013 to see it, but the movie adaptation of the first installment of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments young adult novel series finally has a trailer. City of Bones the novel was released back in 2007 and there are currently five books in the series with a sixth planned for a March 2014 publication date. One would assume if the movie does well the subsequent novels will be made into films as well.
There’s no shortage of material for subsequent films surrounding this supernatural universe, either. In addition to the eventual 7 novels comprising The Mortal Instruments series, Cassandra Clare has a series of three prequel novels entitled The Infernal Devices which are set in Victorian times. Two of the books have already been published with the third planned for March 2013.
It doesn’t stop there. The author has planned a sequel series to The Mortal Instruments called The Dark Artifices. Like the prequel series it’s being planned as a trilogy of novels set five years in the future and with all new characters. Don’t start looking to pre-order the sequels though, as the first book isn’t planned to be published until some time in 2015.
Everyone’s looking for the next Harry Potter and if these films are a success, they could fill the void nicely. With all the books that are out as well as those planned for this universe created by Cassandra Clare, we could be in for decades of thrilling tales.
