Defiance is a new sci-fi drama straight from the minds behind Battlestar Gallactica and Farscape, which as a fan, should tell you all you need to know. It’s set in the near future when an alien race known as Votans seeks refuge on Earth after their solar system is destroyed, but after being strung along for six years of negotiations, they start a war in order to make Earth their home whether humans like it or not. During the war, some of their terraforming technology is released when their ships are shot down which transforms the Earth as we know it, making it a dangerous environment for both Votans and humans. Decades of war later, the humans and Votans finally declare a ceasefire as a matter of exhaustion rather than peaceful negotiations.
Defiance follows Jeb Nolan (Grant Bowler), a military man who was a mere a child of ten when the Votans arrived, who after decades of fighting Votans in the war, decides to return to his hometown of St. Louis once the ceasefire is declared. When he returns home, he finds the city he once knew is replaced by a refugee camp known as Defiance. Realizing they could use his services to protect them from the constant threats of Votan and human clashes, military scavengers and other dangerous visitors, Jeb decides to stay in Defiance as the Chief Lawkeeper.
Based on the story and what I’ve seen from the creators of this show in the past, this definitely looks like it will be a great show to catch. Alien-based sci-fi shows have been lacking lately, so it’s refreshing to see a nice addition to the lineup. Defiance is set to air in April 2013 on Syfy (I know what you’re thinking. Yes, Syfy will actually be going back to its roots and airing some bonafide sci-fi!) and if watching isn’t good enough, Defiance also has a multi-platform, MMO shooter from Trion Worlds in conjunction with the series, so you can see how the struggles of the citizens of Defiance impact your world as well!
