Continuum Ep 101: A Stitch in time – Review

Continuum - Season 1

Recap

The year is 2077. Corporations have taken over all the failed governments and taken away most of the rights of the people, at least according to a freedom fighter group. While broadcasting his message on national TV, the leader is arrested just as a bomb goes of  killing most of the corporate congress. LIBER8, the terrorist group responsible killed 30,000 people in order to murder 20.

Kiera, a cop from the future, is one of those who helped arrest the leader of the terrorist group and is asked to stand in the room during the execution of the terrorists, which is set to be made live on TV. One of the advanced technologies police have in the future is built in retinal computer technology and a suit that adds additional strength and agility to the officer.

During the execution it appears the guard slipped each prisoner something that results in all of them and Kiera to travel back in time. How far back in time? To the year 2012. They didnt mean to go that far back, but they have no choice but to start their movement now, in this new year. The leader of the terrorist group didnt make it through. Kiera is confused about where she is and doesnt recognize the area at first.

Kiera finds out someone can hear her in her head. In the future she has an implant that allows her to speak normal like someone is in front of her but her police station can hear her, like a radio built into her head. But in 2012, this hasnt been invented yet, much to the surprise of the kid on the other end who can hear her. It turns out this kid is Alec Sadler, the inventor of this technology in the future.

Kiera assumes the identity of a police officer from outside the city in order to investigate the activities of the terrorist group that came back in time with her. Along the way she meets Carlos, a local police detective. She manages to kill 1 member of the terrorist group with Carols’ help but they take out a huge number of police officers at the station in a brute force effort to gain control of the city.

Alec asks about his future and what happens to him. Kiera doesnt think its a good idea to tell him. Kiera has a flashback to the future, in the same park she was standing in. In the flash back Kiera meets who we find out is Alec, the head of the largest technology company.

Review

Continuum is another great import from Canada. So many familiar faces grace this show that many of you will remember from some of our favorite SciFi shows including Tony Amendola, Lexa Doig, William B. Davis and Mike Dopud.

What makes this series so intriguing is the time travel story line. It is a story plot that doesnt work very often and there havnt been very many time travel series in the past decade that have lasted beyond 1 season. The main cast is also brilliantly cast with Erik Knudsen as Young Eric Sadler, Rachel Nichols as Kiera and Victor Webster as Carlos.

Another great point is the visual effects. Vancouver has some of the worlds brightest minds when it comes to VFX for TV and film. We visited Vancouver a year ago to visit the set of Falling Skies and one of the studios that does their VFX work, Zoic Studios, has a location in Vancouver. Just like great shows of the past (Sanctuary) Vancouver offers us the best pick of the apple tree in fresh talent and crew.

All in all the story starts out with a bang and doesnt stop. Many questions are raised, as we saw the future Alex Sadler stop her husband from removing her from the room, as if he knew what was going to happen and needed her to go with them. There will be insiders, alliances, and likely additional time travel as we watch the future change with every move in the past. Lets just say any time I see William Davis (cigarette smoking guy from x-files) I will always distrust him. However, the act of being in the past and the possibility of Alec learning about his future might actually change him in the future.
