J.J. Abrams is no stranger to big blockbuster franchises and while he is currently helming Star Trek and the TV series Revolution he has decided to take on a beloved classic, Star Wars (According to Entertainment Weekly, who confirmed the news). Sources with knowledge of the deal say Disney will make an announcement later today, however no official word has been given yet from Abrams or Disney. Back in October it was announced that George Lucas sold the franchise to Disney for just over $4 Billion and also announced that Disney would continue the films with at least 3 more movies. The first film is set to be released in 2015.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with Abrams back in November about Star Wars and how it was the first movie that blew his mind. Here is the quote from EW.com
“As a kid I was always a fan of special effects. Watching movies I was constantly trying to figure out how they did it, whatever the effect was. Star Wars was the first movie that blew my mind in that way; it didn’t matter how they did any of it because it was all so overwhelmingly and entirely great. It was funny and romantic and scary and compelling and the visual effects just served the characters and story. It galvanized for me; not for what wasexciting about how movies were made, but rather for what movies were capable of,”
Many fans have been back and forth on their feelings towards the sale of Star Wars and Lucas Films to Disney but there is high hope with such beloved and big name directors getting behind it, that we will not have a repeat of Episode 1-3 but a repeat of Episode 4-6.
