Just today Universal Pictures set a release date of June 13, 2014 for a new Jurassic Park. In the past many cringed at the thought of another Jurassic Park after its third installment in 2001 was considered by many the death of the franchise. The first film which debuted in 1993 changed the way we watched films with its cutting edge dinosaur puppets and a unique story about an island full of dinosaurs.

The first film has grossed a healthy $914 million dollars worldwide when it was in theaters, with its sequel earning just over $600 million in 1997. After that director Steven Spielberg left the franchise and a new film wasn’t seen until 2001. The third film, directed by Joe Johnston (Captain America), bombed in comparison to its previous 2 films earning only $365 million.

With the return of Spielberg to the franchise, its a promising sign after 12 years without the popular dinosaur films, we might actually get a film worthy of its namesake. Spielberg has been on fire recently with a slew of movies and TV shows that are hitting it big. On TNT, his show Falling Skies broke basic cable records in 2011 and 2012 prompting the network to renew the show for a third season. In movies, Spielberg’s recent film Lincoln prompted a huge 12 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Director and Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis. Robopocalypse which he was set to start directing this Spring, was put on hold indefinitely.
