Kagame and Liber8 have realized that they wont be able to get rid of the CPS agent Kiera. They also learned that going after her past in order to get rid of her wouldn’t work either, so they move forward with the resistance. Kiera has a brief flashback to a riot that happens in the future where she realizes that the liber8 group are not just randomly fighting against the corporations. It turns out that one corporation was holding back rations in order to drive up prices. Basically they were starving the people. This really had Kiera questioning exactly what they were protecting.
In the past (or our present), what seemed like a peaceful protest of an oil giant turned into a full fledged riot used to hide the real crime, the CEO of the company being taken hostage. The first thing they demanded was 20 million to be given for her ransom but they didn’t just ask for money. They used social media in order to bring her sins to light in front of the entire world.
The group asks for the money to be delivered directly in front of the oil companies building and handed out to the people. A stunt that soon had the people paying attention to liber8. In the middle of it all Alec notices that someone has bet 3 mil short on the companies stock. For those of you who dont know what that means, its basically someone betting against the stocks going up, in fact betting the stocks going down. So should something happen that would result in the stocks dropping in value, fast, the person who shorted the stock would walk away with a lot of money. Kiera began to understand what was going on.
Kagame gave his followers a history lesson. Many of the history books for this time were purged by the corporations in order to hide what had happen. In 2010 the financial market collapsed and the governments bailed out the corporations while the CEOs took millions in bonuses. Kagame knew how to play this kidnapping to their favor. His vision was knowledge leads over guns and violence and he isn’t wrong. His point was to enlighten the people on the secret dealings of the large corporations.
After Kiera found the CEO, the bomb strapped to her was nothing more than a way to force her to admit on live video that her company had been stealing from the peoples pensions for years but hid this fact under the guise of the financial collapse being the cause. Kiera looks into the camera with a smile, while on the other end Kagame looks back at her with a smile. There is a sign of mutual respect between them, while unspoken.
This episode left us all feeling like Kiera was siding with liber8 in some areas, including the fact that the corporations were harming the people. Alec hid the fact that his step brother was involved in the riot from Kiera, which upsets her and slightly shacks her trust in him. The other interesting thing from this episode was Kellogg. He was in Kieras apartment and found the missing piece to the time travel device. Just what will he bargain it for?
