Episode 4.14 finds everyone still in the woods of Nova Scotia. Picking up where things left off, Professor Shane, Bonnie, and Jeremy are looking for the well of souls, which sounds ominous. Meanwhile, Damon got attacked by one of the Five, a guy named Vaughn.
Elena, Stefan, and Rebekah decide that stealing what’s called ‘the Hunter’s Sword’ from Klaus is a great idea, and also try to sort out this whole ‘why does a vampire want to be human’ thing. Elena thinks that she knows Stefan’s reasons, and he tells her it’s nothing to do with her. Martyrdom and misery are far more likely at this point.
The deal with the sword is that yes, there is a cure, also Silas has the thing that will destroy him along with him, which is just vague enough for something bad to happen. And, one of the big reveals of the episode is the fact that there’s only enough of the cure for one person, or vampire, if you’re picky. Of course Bonnie doesn’t want Shane to raise Silas, but does open a passageway while she tries to use Jeremy’s tattoos as a kind of magical jolt. But then her grandmother appears and tells her that they have to restore Silas, and feed him. If you think that sounds hinky and bad, you’re right. Fortunately, Jeremy realizes that this isn’t real and stops Bonnie.
Vaughn, the newest vampire hunter, wants to use Damon as collateral, and then things change because like always, there’s a dead body. Only problem being; neither he nor Damon killed them. Somebody else is out there murdering people.
Once Rebekah, Elena, and everyone else find out that there is only enough of the cure for one person, they start getting a little twitchy. Adding to that worry is the fact that Bonnie’s spell won’t hold Klaus for much longer, and once he gets loose, he’s going to kill everybody he can. Tyler and Caroline try to reason with Klaus, and that goes about as well as can be expected, which is to say: not very.
Stefan rescues Damon from Vaughn, and he tells the Littlest Salvatore to give the cure to Elena. Rebekah, still on the ‘sire bond exists and is really evil’ train, tells Damon that if Elena is human, she may not love Damon anymore.
Jeremy and Bonnie find Silas, and guess what, he has to be fed blood, which it just so happens Bonnie has a lot of – so Vaughn shows up, stabs her, and tells Jeremy, who as a vampire hunter is not ‘expendable’ in his book, that they’ve got to raise Silas. Not thrilled, Jeremy declines, and they’re fighting, when Elena swoops in and stops Vaughn from killing her brother. Only, it’s not Elena, it’s Katherine (mystery about who was killing people in the woods now solved!) She bites Jeremy, and feeds him to Silas, which then releases the cure. Of course Katherine grabs the cure and hightails it out of there, while Jeremy falls over, dead, or near to it.
Jeremy may or may not be dead, Bonnie is bleeding out, and it’s ‘crisis as usual’ for the Mystic Falls gang.
The issue of whether or not Elena loves Damon is getting tiresome – either she was compelled, or she wasn’t, but if she becomes human again and feels nothing at all, then that’s a lie too – because she definitely liked Damon before she became a vampire. Maybe it comes down to inhibition, and the lack thereof when she was Turned. Who knows, but it’s likely that the subject will be raised again. That, and whether or not Bonnie, Caroline, and Rebekah can figure out where they want to be in their own relationships is getting so convoluted that it’s going to take a spreadsheet to figure out who’s loyal to whom, and which person is going on a date versus being trapped in a cave for eternity.
This show is strongest when it’s not focusing on the romance and relationships to the exclusion of everything else. At the same time, the cure storyline has gone on for so long that it’s beginning to drag. Hopefully now there will be some kind of chase to grab the cure. And, with Katherine back in the picture, it looks like things are going to be a little more interesting.
