Much of my free time, what little of it there is, I spend aimlessly meandering around the web looking for things to amuse me. If I’m lucky I’ll find something I think you’ll find amusing, too. I realized it had been some time since I made my way over to ShortOfTheWeek.com to see what indie gems might be shining for us to enjoy. So, you know, I dug around until I came up with something short, but very sweet.
There’s this great animation school in Spain called Primerframe (It’s in Spanish, so you may have to run it through a translator) and they’re obviously doing a great job of teaching not only the craft of CGI, but storytelling. I featured a very funny, and very popular, video of theirs here before. If you haven’t seen Friendsheep yet, I beseech you to do so posthaste. Check out our article “In Animated Short ‘Friendsheep’ A Wolf Gets His Dream Job” and be both amazed and amused by what a group of students can do.
To prove these students are no one-hit wonders and that Primerframe really knows how to bring out the creativity in them, they’ve got another great short to show the world. In El Vendedor de Humo (The Smoke Seller) they weave together a thoroughly entertaining story with a smile-inducing ending.
This little student-made short has won literally dozens of awards at film festivals worldwide. Like Friendsheep before it, the genius of this story isn’t that it has no dialogue so it remains free of any language barriers. The real beauty is that the story doesn’t need dialogue. None of the best ones every really do.
Short tagline for “The Smoke Seller” from the film’s official website:
Making a living making people happy should be an easy task, however, there are times that things are not what they seem and then everything gets complicated.
Wait…you didn’t take a detour and watch Friendsheep yet? Do yourself a favor and click on the image of the sleeping wolf below to check it out. You won’t be sorry, I promise. Okay, if you’re dead inside you might be a little sorry, but you’re probably already feeling that way so it’s not my fault! Hell, this might just spark some life into your soul. Between these two shorts you might even crack a smile or, shudder at the thought, laugh.
