Doctor Who: How To Make A Sontaran / Kids Ask Strax

Doctor Who is known for having plenty of comical moments, even in the midst of galaxy-destroying scenarios.  A fan favorite for providing many of those moments, especially this season, has been everyone’s favorite Sontaran Warrior/Nurse/Butler, Commander Strax.  Played to comic perfection by actor Dan Starkey, he’s become the de facto poster child for misunderstanding and overreaction.  And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to turn the perfectly human Mr. Starkey into the completely Sontaran Strax, here’s a time-lapse video of the twe hour make-up process it takes to give him that perfect potato head.

Starkey isn’t just great at playing a comical Sontaran, he’s also a very brave man.  He recently headlined a solo Q&A panel where he fielded questions from kids while in character.  That’s both dedicated and brave.

The panel was held as part of A Monster Day Out on April 3rd.  The event was held at the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff by Doctor Who Adventures magazine to celebrate their new redesign.

Watch Starkey entertain these children without the aid of a net or a script.  Very brave indeed.

Doctor Who returns Saturday, November 23rd, 2013.
