Juliette has another memory flashback as she thinks about the scratches she got from Adalind’s cat. She remembers Nick telling her that Adalind was a witch and that she needed to go to the hospital. Meanwhile, Nick is getting ready to head to work when he meets Monroe coming home from the farmer’s market. Monroe suggests they have dinner that night, and Nick agrees – depending on work, of course. He then heads to a coffee shop to meet Hank who’s back from vacation – and on crutches. It turns out that he went ziplining and landed a little bit wrong. He also tells Nick that he was with his ex-wife on vacation as an experiment. They were continuing to catch up when they hear a gunshot. Nick runs off to the bookstore it came from while Hank calls it in and hobbles over.
Nick runs into the bookstore and sees that the author who was signing books has been shot and killed. He can hear a woman screaming, so he heads for her and sees her struggling with a Luisant-Pecheur (otter-like creature) named Anton. Nick confronts the Wesen, who takes a few shots at him as he covers the woman, then runs out the back of the building. Nick runs after him and sees Anton jump into the Willamette River and disappear. Back inside, Nick and Hank talk to Chloe, the girlfriend of the deceased author and ex-girlfriend of Anton. Chloe tells them that Anton had gotten too obsessed with her, but that happened a lot – she has a mesmerizing effect on men. She thanks Nick for saving her life and kisses his hand.
Hank, Nick and Sgt. Wu head to Anton’s loft, which is filled with all sorts of art, most of it featuring a woman that looks like Chloe. Nick is staring aimlessly at one of the portraits when Hank and Sgt. Wu call him into the next room – Anton has made their job easier by doing a painting of the dead author at the signing, a clear act of premeditation. Just as he takes a photo of the painting, Nick’s phone rings and it’s Juliette. She asks him to dinner that night and he agrees, but then he gets focused on a photo of Chloe on a table in Anton’s apartment.
Hank heads off to physical therapy, and Nick heads to Chloe’s place, telling her that he needed to check a few things. She invites him in. Across town, Juliette calls Monroe as they’re both making dinner for Nick, seeking reassurance. Monroe tells her that Nick’s been waiting for something like this for a long time and to just start talking and see what happens. Back at Chloe’s, Nick shows her the painting Anton had done of her ex lying dead in a pool of blood and asks if she’d seen it before, but she says no. He then asks about her posing for Anton, and she says that she did pose for him, and for many others – that’s how she has a collection of artwork she’d never be able to afford otherwise. He asks if she has a thing for artists, and she says that she has a thing for people who see the world differently – and that she likes to inspire them. Nick asks her how she does that, and she kisses him. A moment later, she morphs into a Musai (an elf-like Wesen), but then pulls away as she realizes Nick saw her morph and what that means. Nick tries to kiss her again when his phone rings, interrupting them. It’s Monroe, who’s calling to give Nick a hard time about not letting him know that his dinner plans had changed. He quickly leaves Chloe’s and heads to Juliette’s house.
Nick arrives and apologizes for being late. He follows Juliette into the kitchen and asks what she wanted to talk about. She begins to explain, but he’s distracted by hallucinations of Chloe and wanders off. Juliette is baffled and tries to apologize again. When she starts telling him that she still has feelings for him, he’s again distracted by a vision of Chloe and hasn’t heard a thing she’s said. He tells her that he’s feeling off tonight and that they should talk soon… and then leaves.
He heads back to Monroe’s house, and when Monroe asks how things went, Nick answers in short sentences and then turns rude, telling Monroe that he should get his own life and stay out of his. He then leaves again. Juliette calls Monroe, asking if Nick hates her. Monroe tells her that Nick is acting weird for sure – maybe it’s something to do with work? He tells Juliette he’s going to call Hank. Monroe gives Hank the update, and he calls Nick, arranging to meet him at a local bar. When Hank arrives, Nick is drawing Chloe’s Wesen form. Hank is intrigued – and unfortunately a drunk bar patron is, too. He starts bugging Nick, asking about the drawing and wanting to take it to show his girlfriend. Nick loses his temper and punches the guy, storming out of the bar while Hank uses his badge to get the drunk guy to back off.
Hank takes Nick’s drawing to Monroe’s house to consult with him and Rosalee, but neither of them have ever seen a Wesen like Chloe before. They head to Aunt Marie’s trailer – Rosalee has never been there before, and she’s both fascinated and appalled at the items inside. The three begin to search through the various books for Chloe. Finally Monroe finds the Musai in a book and reads the entry out loud, including that the kiss of the Musai is as euphoric and addictive as a narcotic, and once it starts, the relationship ends in madness and death. Unfortunately, Hank knows Chloe kissed Nick’s hand… and they don’t know what happened when he saw her earlier. Also – they don’t know where Nick is now.
The next morning, Nick arrives at work in the same clothes from the day before and is very terse when Hank questions where he’s been. Hank then tries to explain that he’s found out that Chloe is a Musai, and Nick rudely asks if he thinks he’s a Grimm now. Hank gives up on that and shows Captain Renard video of Anton breaking into a paint store the night before. He also shows the Captain records that Chloe’s previous boyfriends all went mad and hurt or killed themselves or others. Then Sgt. Wu tells them that he knows what Anton did with all the paint, suggesting the Captain join them.
Monroe and Rosalee are at the spice shop, looking through her books. She finds information on the fact that the Musai secrete a psychotropic substance when they kiss for which there is no medicinal antidote. Rosalee thinks that the only way to break this kind of obsession is with the real thing. Right then, Juliette walks in and asks for the key to the trailer. She’s close to connecting to the memory of the night she went into the coma, and she needs to deal with it alone. Monroe is reluctant, but Rosalee is encouraging so he gives Juliette the key.
Nick, Hank, Captain Renard and Sgt. Wu are on a footbridge above a city street downtown, where Anton has made a large portrait of Chloe on the street with the stolen paint. A moment later and the other three realize Nick has disappeared – Hank can’t run, so Sgt. Wu heads off after him. While the other two are gone, Hank shows Renard the drawing of Chloe as a Musai.
Juliette arrives at Aunt Marie’s trailer, but at first the memory won’t come. She pages through the books and walks around, and finally it comes. She remembers Nick explaining the Wesen and that Grimms can see them, and then rushes out of the trailer. She heads back to the spice shop and tells Monroe and Rosalee that she remembers, and that she didn’t believe Nick at the time – she thought he was crazy. But she knows that Monroe and Rosalee believe him, and Rosalee confirms that. Juliette wants to see Nick so she can tell him that she believes him, but the two stop her.
Monroe and Rosalee let Hank know that there’s nothing they can do, but Nick needs to be kept away from Chloe. Captain Renard heads to Chloe’s home as Hank calls the officer stationed outside. Nick arrives and Chloe lets him in, and he immediately starts kissing her, telling her that he needs her. Chloe tells him that he has to prove it – Anton’s in the house. The two begin fighting and Nick gets the better of Anton, but when he goes to kiss Chloe, she tells him that she can’t as long as Anton’s alive. The sounds of the fight bring in the officer from outside just as Captain Renard arrives. The officer handcuffs Anton, but Anton keeps taunting Nick that he can never have Chloe, and Nick keeps trying to get at him. Captain Renard has to hold him back.
Over at the spice shop, Monroe and Rosalee are trying to explain what’s going on with Nick to Juliette. She surprises them by asking if the woman ‘influencing’ Nick is a Wesen, and they say yes. She then asks if it’s like what happened to her, and they again tell her yes – but there’s no antidote on the shelf for this. Juliette herself is the antidote.
At the police station, Hank and Captain Renard confront Chloe. They tell her that they know she’s a Musai and that she needs to stop what she’s doing to Nick. She tells them that she can’t – and things are moving much more quickly with Nick because he’s a Grimm and has so much power. Nick, meanwhile, is sitting at his desk drawing when an officer tells him that the suspect has been booked and is in his cell. Nick goes down to the cells just as Hank and Captain Renard discover his drawing of Anton dead in his cell. A moment later, Monroe, Rosalee and Juliette show up.
Everyone rushes down to the cells just as Nick stands with his gun, ready to shoot Anton. Captain Renard has a gun on him, and Juliette begins to talk to Nick, walking closer until she can touch him, telling him to look at her. He drops the gun as Chloe’s voice in his head wars with Juliette’s voice in his face. She puts her hands on his face, trying to force him to look at her. He finally does, and begins to come back to himself. He asks her what she’s doing there, and she replies, “I’m here for you, just like you were there for me.” They both begin to tear up as Nick thanks her and they hug. Just then, Anton reaches out for the gun Nick dropped, but a foot steps on it before he can pick it up – Captain Renard isn’t having any shooting in his jail today.
Captain Renard heads back up to the interregation room where Chloe is being held and tells her that he’s going to let her walk, but she’s going to leave Portland and never come back, because if she does, the part of him that doesn’t wear a badge might do something… and he then morphs into a Hexenbiest to prove it.
WOW WOW WOW!!! This is one of the best episodes so far this season – and that’s saying something! I still have chills!
The scene at the end where Juliette breaks Nick out of the obsession was absolutely amazing. David Giuntoli and Bitsie Tulloch were both incredible – it’s such an intense scene and so touching that yes, I was practically crying along with them – and I don’t cry easily at all! If these two hadn’t already proved to you what great actors they are, this scene will drive it home. So many kudos to David and Bitsie!
Back to Juliette – can I just say HOORAY and FINALLY that she remembers Nick telling her about being a Grimm and about Wesen and she’s OKAY WITH IT?! YES! Thank everything!! And the preview for next week’s episode already has me looking forward to seeing Juliette progress even more! In terms of the relationship with Nick, hopefully they won’t immediately go back to being a couple. They’ve both been through so much that they need to get to know each other again, through new eyes, so I vote for them ‘dating’ for a while. Maybe Juliette should try that dinner again soon. 😉
Another great thing about this episode is that because Nick was basically out of his mind, that left Hank, Monroe, Rosalee and Renard to work it all out together. It was an interesting little dance, but they managed it well – and ultimately their efforts are what saved the day. Hank may not be a Grimm, Nick, but it seems your friends CAN do your job and save your butt sometimes!
It was also fun to see Sasha Roiz kick a little butt and add in some humor. When Captain Renard stopped Anton from taking the gun, his “Really?” make me laugh so loudly I stopped sniffling. And his lovely threat at the end to Chloe – priceless!
So… is it next Tuesday yet?!
