In the middle of Sergel’s Square in Stockholm, Sweden, a group of men with red masks walk through the crowd and into a subway station. They all board the train where a woman is following them and gets on the train with them. She turns to look at them just as they all turn to look at her and they are shown to have briefcases handcuffed to them. The woman breaks a glass chamber and all the lights go out before they stop the train. As everyone runs off screaming and a worker comes to investigate he finds the men in red masks presumably dead and one of them has their hand cut off. His briefcase is missing but the woman has taken it, she opens it (already somehow knowing the code) and finds diamonds inside. She puts the diamonds in her bag as another train approaches but when it passes, she’s gone. Coulson tries to talk to May about learning to fly, but when he asks her what she likes best about it she tells him “solitude”, giving him the hint to leave. Fitz and Simmons are working on new weapons as Ward looks on, and Coulson finds Skye in the car to tell her to find out how someone stole millions of dollars in diamonds by breaking through security systems. They travel to Stockholm to check out the scene where Coulson explains that the men in red masks were military men, 55 of them were hired to travel 25 routes in Stockholm with the briefcases but no one was told who actually had the diamonds. The thief had struck before and she always had her eyes closed as well as knew which one had the diamonds. May wonders why HQ wants them investigating these events to which Coulson replies that HQ doesn’t..but he does. Skye locates pictures of the men in red masks through instagram and other sites and Coulson is able to point out the thief in one of the pictures. He explains that he’s certain it’s her, because he trained her.
Coulson reveals he has chosen this particular assignment because of his history with her, and her name is Akela Amador. He was told she was dead (though they never officially found any evidence) after another assignment went bad but he had an inkling that she was behind the recent heists. The team figures out how she travelled without being noticed and where she most likely is now based on the diamonds’ location. Akela is in a hotel room where she closes her eyes and somehow figures out that there’s a man, along with two others waiting elsewhere, outside her door. She pulls the man outside her door inside her room where she was apparently waiting for him. He trades access codes for the diamonds that she’s hidden inside what looks like golf balls (which dissolve when water is poured on them). The man hands her a card which she needs to access other things.
The team travels to search for Akela and bring her in to figure out why she went rogue. Coulson and Ward go on foot to ask around the town if anyone recognizes her while Fitz-Simmons and Skye search frequences to see if they can pick up on her. They’re able to connect to a server where they pick up on strange images before finally decoding it. A local woman recognizes her calling her an “angel” as Skye finally breaks through the signal feed to find that Akela is looking straight at their van. Akela drives straight for the van and knocks it over the edge of a hill so that she can escape. Luckily, the team is unharmed but their search becomes frenzied as Coulson remains adamant about finding her and the others become nervous. They connect to her signal again to discover her looking in a mirror but with no camera around. They watch as she inserts a camera into her eye, technology way beyond anything they knew existed. They figure out that the camera is used not only to watch her, but to control her as well.
Skye talks with Coulson about the woman, telling him that if he trusts she’s good, then she’ll trust his judgement. Later that night they get a hit on a receipt she’s looking at that gives away her location, but May has already taken off to find her. She’s found Akela’s room and discusses bringing her in to S.H.I.E.L.D., but Akela has a surprise for her: the people controlling her have built a failsafe so that she either follows orders or they kill her. She and May begin fighting until Coulson interrupts and knocks Akela out. He takes her to the bus where she stays safe while they work on the killswitch in her eye. Ward is given glasses that transmits everything her eye camera would and they hijack the feed to receive the messages from whoever is controlling her. Akela and Coulson are able to deduce several things about the controller while Ward carries out her mission and Fitz-Simmons work to take out her killswitch. Ward finds the target but runs into a problem when the controller tells him to “seduce him” thinking they’re still talking to Akela. He knocks out the guard instead and goes into a room to find 2 men working with codes written all around them. Ward looks at one and the controller takes a picture of it before telling him “good luck”. He starts to leave but an alarm sets off and guards chase after him where he’s able to escape with Skye. Fitz and Simmons are able to deactive the eye camera and kill switch just in time and Coulson finds the controller of Akela’s eye function. However, he’s being controlled as well and is killed the second Coulson shows his badge.
Coulson escorts Akela to where S.H.I.E.L.D. police are waiting and tells her that she’ll get the fair trial she deserves now and that he’ll be there to testify for her. He leaves as May walks up and Akela asks what they did to Coulson as he seems different now. May only reacts with confusion before Akela tells her “never mind”. Coulson finds Skye hanging out in the S.H.I.E.L.D. car again and talks with her about Akela and how peaceful everything feels at that moment. Fitz plays cards with Ward but he tries to cheat by having Skye use the glasses Ward was wearing earlier to find out what cards he has. She points out that doing so will make her also be able to see him naked so he folds and runs away leaving Ward very confused. She takes this time to use the glasses to check him out while his reflection can be seen.
First off, apologies for this being so late this week. You all can relate to the fun times of midterms and projects, it’s been one crazy week. Last week’s episode was a fun ride as it deviated from the typical S.H.I.E.L.D. adventures and the team went off on their own hunt. Coulson’s reluctance to bring S.H.I.E.L.D. to find Akela was cool to see as he still sees the good in people despite all the evidence pointing out otherwise. He may work for something much bigger than himself, but he’s still willing to break the rules to do what’s right. The team is finally starting to feel whole as a family and able to take on bigger and badder things as the season progresses. The writers have done a great job of slowly building their confidence so far while also establishing the feel from the beginning rather than dragging it out all season. It was another solid episode from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. camp. Until next week!
