Outlander: Talking with Diana Gabaldon, MarlyBird’s Podcast

MarlyBird.com, a knitter’s website, broadcast a fascinating podcast featuring an in-depth interview with Outlander author Diana Gabaldon today. Marly introduces the author, explaining that she got into the Outlander series when she found out that main character Jamie Fraser, a 1700s Scottish Highlander, knew how to “clickit,” or knit! The podcast covers Diana’s early days as an author, her writing process and research procedures, and the upcoming 16-episode STARZ original series adaptation (first season to cover only Outlander, and set to air likely March or April 2014). (Please note that if you haven’t read all 7 books in the series, you may find quite a few spoilers in the discussion. Fair warning!)

In a very touching moment, Diana, voice breaking, discusses the origin of one of the series’ most romantic and memorable lines.

Diana talks about her reaction to the casting of Sam Heughan as Jamie for the TV series, as she viewed his audition tape: “Five seconds later, Sam Heughan was gone, and so was I. Sam is a lovely guy, and I’ve gotten to know him over the last three or four months.” She talks about their relationship growing on Twitter, one viewed by thousands of her devoted fans. “Gabs” and “Sheugs,” as they call each other, have a witty, flirtatious banter that is fun to read.

The eighth book in the series, Written In My Own Heart’s Blood (or MOBY), is scheduled to be published on March 25. Diana discusses the book in general – spoiler-free!

You can listen to the podcast here. Listen all the way through, and you will find an opportunity to enter a drawing to win the first 7 chapters of MOBY!  And if you have an interest in yarn crafts — knitting, crocheting or otherwise — spend some time on this fabulous website!
