With Thanksgiving right around the corner, Ichabod is a bit irked as the holidays only serve to remind him of his loss and how much he misses his beloved wife, Katrina. As Abbie sympathizes with him about the holidays, the captain interrupts them with a new case. A young billionaire, Nina Gilbert, whose lineage dates back to the founding fathers, has gone missing with a last known location in Sleepy Hollow. Furthermore, a note on her desk has “Katrina C.” written on it. The captain has considered the possible connection to Ichabod, so he sends Abbie and Ichabod to investigate. Ichabod is convinced that Katrina C. is his wife so has Abbie search for Nina’s lineage and discovers she is distantly related to the Fredericks, one of whom was a friend of Katrina’s. Ichabod quickly realizes where Nina could be and takes Abbie to the Fredericks’ manor where they find Nina’s abandoned car and Ichabod is surprised by the current decrepit state of the manor.
They enter the house and after finding Nina’s bodyguard dead in a chair, the house shuts itself up and traps them. Strangely, Ichabod finds Katrina’s favorite book with a letter he had written to her prior to facing Headless on the battlefield. Ichabod reminisces about meeting Katrina’s friend who had created a sanctuary in his home for runaway and former slaves, including a woman well known for helping out, Grace Dixon. As he thinks back, he notes that the manor seemed to be a refuge from supernatural threats as well and that some demonic force somehow turned it from a sanctuary to a prison. Just then, Nina makes some noise in her root-ridden closet prison and our favorite duo manage to find her. As Ichabod cuts her out, each hack that slices into the roots causes them to bleed and wakens a root monster outside. A pretty creepy, cool root monster that would make an awesome Halloween costume… it kind of reminded me of a demonic Ent.
Anyway, Nina tells them what they’ve already figured out, (the house is alive) as Ichabod attempts to discover whom she was referring to with the Katrina C. from her notes. She tells him that Katrina C. was in fact, Katrina Crane the last known guest on the registry before the house came to ruin. As Mills, Nina and Ichabod try to find another exit, he informs her that her ancestor was a warlock involved with witchcraft and was possibly a member of Katrina’s coven and something demonic had broken the hex around the house and infested the property. He asks her about her research, but she tells him it’s all back in New York and can tell him nothing more. Just as they find themselves trapped in a corner, Abbie finds a door into the walls where they are quickly separated as they try to escape, because that’s always what happens on TV when people are running for their lives. Of course, that’d probably happen to me as well and I’d be the first to die, because I’d trip on one of those roots forget how to stand, walk or run and just scream as the monster killed me.
Anyway, after managing to escape into the walls, Ichabod and Nina break out of the wall into a room, but as Ichabod turns to help Abbie through, the root monster takes his hand. Aw, how nice of Ichabod, offering to help the root monster like that. The two, now completely cut off from Abbie, run from the monster but crows suddenly attack and Nina disappears once more. As Ichabod searches for his missing companion, Abbie searches for her as well and finds herself face to face with the ghost of Grace Dixon. Grace cryptically tells her, “It’s time” and then disappears into another room. Abbie follows her, but Grace has disappeared, so Abbie continues her search until Grace reappears and takes her into a room where a woman (give you one guess who that probably is) is giving birth. Yep, you guessed it, Katrina is giving birth to Ichabod’s baby boy! Though it was fairly obvious at this point that the woman in labor was going to be, admittedly I never would have guessed it prior to that! With the vision over, Abbie goes back to her search and Ichabod finds her as he puzzles over an escape, but Abbie interrupts him to tell him the not-so-good news about his beloved…and his son. Can’t help but feel sorry for the poor guy. He’s already suffering at not being able to be with his wife and now, on top of that, he finds he’s lost a son too. Abbie’s vision solved the mystery behind the house, Katrina came for a safe place to have her baby, but the evil things found a way around the hex by growing inside them and just as Katrina’s baby was born, they attacked and Fredericks was killed by the root demon. Yet the vision only served to add one more mystery for Ichabod regarding what happened to his son.
Just then Nina screams, so the two go to find and rescue her…again. This time they manage to free her from the monster and run only to find themselves trapped until Ghost Grace shows them the secret way out of the manor. The three escape to safety by the car, where Ichabod tells Abbie to wait outside and not to come back in under any circumstances. He grabs the axe (which he just happened to have in the car) and heads back inside. Lighting up the room with some flares, he lures the monster out and then proceeds to hack the hell out of it working out much of his frustration, no doubt, until the demon is on its knees in front of him where he deals it one final blow as he sinks the axe into the demon’s head, killing it. He returns to the car, a bit on the bloody side, and they all happily (or not so happily if you’re Ichabod) return home. Meanwhile, as Ichabod and Abbie were having their little adventure, Jenny came up with the idea to have a Thanksgiving celebration. While inviting Captain Irving to the dinner, however, they are surprised by Irving’s visiting family. I’m a bit curious as to what has happened with his family as one thing is clear: Captain Irving kind of sucks at the doting dad thing. Seeing his daughter one weekend in a month, his ex-wife has had enough and no longer wants to put their daughter through that disappointment. She gives him an ultimatum: be a dad and be around for her or if he cancels one more weekend, she’ll file the paperwork for full custody.
Learning about Jenny’s plans after returning home from the manor, Abbie attempts to persuade Ichabod in joining him, but with the recent events he is far from a festive mood and declines her offer. The two discuss the events and Abbie opens a package that came from Nina. The package contains the research that Nina had conducted regarding the manor including a family tree of Grace Dixon ending in, surprisingly (or not so surprisingly for some), Abbie’s mother! That’s right, Abbie is a direct descendent from the woman who brought Ichabod’s son into the world. Clearly their paths have been “entwined from the very start” which just adds to the mystery behind it all and what’s to come of it…also what has become of Ichabod’s son? Honestly, with this new revelation, I half-expected them to find that Abbie was Ichabod’s descendent, which would have been impossible prior to this. Wouldn’t that be an interesting twist?
