I feel like I have to say it every week with Teen Wolf, NEVER TRUST ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS WITH THIS SHOW! SERIOUSLY. Last week’s episode left everyone with a case of the feels while Stiles struggled with a very delicate battle between “self” and “nogitsune”. He went missing (AGAIN) and his actions are only getting crazier and crazier by the minute.
Season 3B has had to scale back a lot of its action sequences due to budgetary reasons but “Letharia Vulpina” put aside all of that in a no-holds-barred free for all. We pick right back up with the end of “Riddled” where the severed electrical wire is flashing towards Kira. A distracted ambulance drivers goes to avoid it and ends up hitting a fire hydrant which in turn send water spreading everywhere. Allison is about to be electrocuted before Isaac pushes her out of the way and gets electrocuted himself. He REALLY can’t catch a break in this show…he’s the series punching bag it feels like. Anyway, he spends the rest of the episode layed up unconscious in the hospital, badly burned, and in serious danger. Kira, however, tests her new found kitsune abilities by stepping right into the water and grabbing the wire. She’s able to control the flow and prevent anyone else from suffering a similar fate. Her mom, somehow unsurprised by this display of power, quickly ushers her away from the scene. Allison spends all of her time at the hospital awaiting Isaac’s werewolf healing which he doesn’t do for some reason. Is it because of something with the nogitsune or what? The reasoning is never fully explained but it’s sure to come back around.
Deaton finally made an appearance but he proved just how sneaky he can be. In Japan, a young wolf, Yuki, is ill and Deaton has been called to cure it since they have no idea what could be wrong with him. Deaton arrives and believes that the young wolf has gotten into a type of lichen called “Letharia Vulpina” or “werewolf lichen”. As the man questions whether Deaton truly believes Yuki got into it, Deaton explains that he doesn’t even believe Yuki could have been dragged near the site. The lichen turns out to be covering the very spot where the man from “Silverfinger” was killed by the Oni after being possessed by the Nogitsune. Letharia Vulpina is a poison to wolves and foxes and was used in ancient times to do just that to foreign enemies. Deaton has used a paralyzing agent on Yuki so that he could get a sample of the lichen.
Back in Beacon Hills, all hell is breaking loose as the Nogitsune feeds on its three main sources of power: Pain, Strife, and Chaos. The Nogitsune, or Stiles, has been missing for two days following the events at the hospital. Everyone is keeping an eye out for him but he’s been completely off the grid besides being seen leaving the hospital in his jeep. At the school, Scott, Ethan, and Aiden all discuss the recent happenings when they here one of Argent’s emitters begin to go off. They follow it to the basement where, of all people, Stiles is standing in front of an electrical outlet. He has a particularly evil look as he recognizes their presence but when he turns to look at them he feigns ignorance about anything he’s been up to the last couple of days. The only clues he has are blueprints of the hospital and local forest where some P.E. students are out running in. They realize that he’s been up to some dangerous stuff and take off for the woods to stop anyone from getting hurt. Stiles stops the students (leaving everyone, including the coach, confused seeing as he’s been missing for days) just in time but unfortunately the coach isn’t so lucky and ends up taking an arrow to the gut. As the coach is loaded into an ambulance and Stiles reunites with his dad, Ethan and Aiden find the exact wrapping paper used for the coach’s halloween prank in Stiles’ jeep. This time, however, Stiles has used it for something much more ominous. Jared, who thankfully didn’t puke this time, picks up a wrapped present on the bus only for everyone to realize that it may be a bomb. One of the youngest officers in the whole town (who surprisingly has the most qualifications) goes on board to defuse it but while he distracts Jared he cuts the ribbon from the box and finds only one thing inside: an office desk plaque with the name “Sheriff Stilinski”.
Earlier in the episode, Sheriff Stilinski received several packages that were supposed to be standard supplies in case of another electrical outage and ink cartridges. He realizes that there is a bomb set to go off but not at the school. It’s sitting in his own office where an arrested Derek and Papa Argent are handcuffed to a bench. When the packages were delivered, Agent McCall came in to ask Stilinski if he had any trouble with a Japanese mobster named Katashi. Papa Argent came home to his door partially cracked and Derek waiting for him inside. They find one of his emitters stabbed into his desk and one of his hiding spots broken with a briefcase inside. It’s the money from the deal they never ended up making with Kitashi for the fun. Derek and Papa Argent stare at his confused when Agent McCall walks in and wonders what their involvement is with him. He holds up Kitashi’s “silver finger” and tells them he got it off Kitashi’s dead body. Anyway, they’re awaiting Agent McCall’s return at the station when the officers go in to panic mode over the bomb. The bomb goes off before they can get them out of the handcuffs but Derek saves Papa Argent’s life by shielding him from the blast and glass. Unfortunately, several officers are seriously injured or killed in the blast.
At this point, things are really starting to hit the fan. In addition to everything already happening, Peter finds a way to contact Lydia and offer his assistance in helping her hone her banshee skills in return for a favor. He wants to know about a memory that his sister, Talia, took from him. Allison goes along to make sure he doesn’t try anything outrageous and stays skeptical of his motives the whole time. She’s able to uncover from the nails they use of Talia’s that the memory she took from him is that not only is he an uncle, but more importantly A FATHER. A FATHER?!?! PETER HALE?! The thought of Peter reproducing makes the Nogitsune look like a heaven sent puppy dog..Lydia tells him she doesn’t know who the child is and takes off but it is later revealed that his child is Malia Tate. I knew there had to be a reason for that story line! It ended too abruptly and happily to be a Teen Wolf story arc. Elsewhere, Kira overhears her parents discussing the nine fox tails they have hidden in a book. Her mother has already sacrificed five but she tells her husband she’s willing to sacrifice all of them if it means destroying the Nogitsune. She proceeds to break a few of the remaining fox tails that will help her to create even stronger Oni.
Kira arrives at the now shattered sheriff’s station to convey to Scott and Stiles that the Oni are on their way for Stiles. Scott suggests going to Deaton’s animal clinic as it is surrounded in mountain ash which will hold them off long enough to formulate some sort of defense. However, they’re attacked outside the clinic and Kira and Scott go full out badbutt mode to take down the Oni to protect Stiles. Kira does an amazing job of fending them off, almost as if she’s done it before, but Scott ends up taking a sword to through the gut. Kira knocks down the Oni and she and Stiles get him inside. Kira’s about to pull the sword out when Stiles knocks her out and uses it as a way to torture Scott. Stiles, now full out freaky Nogitsune, taunts Scott. He tells Scott that he should know to never trust a fox as they’re very tricky, and implies that he’s been fulling Scott (and everyone, really) by acting like the old Stiles. The Nogitsune takes all the pain that Scott took using his Alpha powers (from Isaac, the coach, and one of the dying sheriff’s) and feeds off of it. He tells Scott that he’s got almost everyone fooled until Deaton shows up and injects him with the letharia vulpina poison, temporarily knocking him out. Deaton pulls out the sword and tells Scott that it isn’t a cure but that it’s only a poison to the Nogitsune…for now.
Again, I cannot commend the cast of Teen Wolf enough for their amazing talent in every episode to date. Especially that of Dylan O’Brien as he’s had to take on an entirely different persona through the role of the Nogitsune. The kid deserves some kind of Emmy award or something for his acting at this point, SERIOUSLY I CANNOT SAY SERIOUSLY ENOUGH. “Letharia Vulpina” was everything we’ve been missing since “Anchors” premiered with more action and fight sequences. However, if there’s still a little over 4 weeks to go, how much more hectic can it get from here? (Check back in next week as I’ll literally be eating my own words.) It was refreshing to see Deaton do what he does best by being calmingly cunning in his approach to getting a sample of the lichen and Kira taking a larger role in the fighting back part of things. Also, props to Allison for doing what most everyone has wanted to do from the beginning in regards to her tasing Peter! That was simply an epically satisfying moment watching him wither on the ground. Hopefully now that Derek has also done his duty in saving Papa Argent’s life, they can gain a mutual respect for one another and take a larger role in the action as well. At this point, Teen Wolf isn’t provoking anxiety or emotions, etc, it’s provoking SHEER TERROR. A death has been promised from one of the series main characters and Stiles is only getting progressively dangerous to be around. It’s all going down from here… What are your theories fans?
