What would it feel like to be chased by the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who?
YouTube user John Smith is a major Doctor Who fan and an excellent VFX Artist/Director who’s made some great videos, mostly about Doctor Who, a couple of which we’ve spotlighted in the past. You might remember the fantastic DoctorWho/Sherlock crossover video, Wholock we featured in December or the hilarious A Very Dalek Christmas which popped up a week later. Click the linked titles to check them out. You’ll be glad you did.
Thanks to the keen eye of Frasier McAlpine over at the absolutely wonderful BBC America Anglophenia blog, we’ve learned that Mister Smith has a new creation to share. His latest video, Stone, gives the viewer a victim’s-eye view of the creepy goings-on in some rainy, dark corridors occupied by the mineral menaces. And it works chillingly well – especially the ending. Really, don’t blink, because you won’t want to miss a second of it.
As Stone opens, we find ourselves in a maze-like series of brick hallways vaguely reminiscent of Wolfenstein 3D, if said game were photorealistically rendered, that is. It’s dark, you turn on your flashlight and after walking for a bit you hear something. You turn around and … (You’ll have to watch to find out).
This is my first ever CG short film. It’s the culmination of about three months of work, from initial concept to final result. I had to use every single trick and technique I knew, as well as learn countless more.
The programs used were Mudbox, Maya, After Effects, and Premiere.
