Game Of Thrones Review – ‘Oathkeeper’

By: Robert Prentice
game of thrones

So far this season each episodes title has continued to give us important clues to the overall progression of the season. This episode was called Oathkeeper and it seems that the King Slayer is looking to keep his promise to Lady Stark in protecting her daughters. Brianne named the sword Jamie gave her Oathkeeper, as she set off to keep the oath given to Lady Stark in protecting her children. What was also interesting tonight was when Jamie met with Tyrion for the first time since Joffreys death and he referred to Joffrey as ‘her son’. Ceresi pushing Jamie away was just the beginning, he clearly had little love for his son either. We can’t like Jamie after his rape scene with his sister but is he attempting to redeem himself after everything he and his family have done?

Tommen is next in line to be king and he will need a queen at his side. His mother will do anything to protect him and she is not pulling any punches. However, Lady Margaery finds her way into his chambers (per her grandmothers advise) and begins to befriend the young boy king. I don’t know about you but Game Of Thrones is king at uncomfortable or taboo situations. I mean I guess Joffrey was young also, but Tommen is far younger and having someone like Margaery in his bed just felt a bit weird. At least the kiss was on the forehead, they could have really made that worse.

Bran and his companions don’t fare well as they search north of the wall, captured by the former men of the nights watch who turned on them at Crasters. Bran reveals who they are in order to spare the others further harm. With Jon on his way to kill those men to prevent them from spilling secrets to Mance, will they be used as hostages?

The Mother of Dragons takes the city with style, going inside to infiltrate the slave dens and give them weapons so they could overthrow their own masters. The empowerment she gave the people made it easy for her to walk into the city and gain another massive boost to her army. And as payment for what they did to the children of the city, she had 163 of the masters who survived nailed alive to crosses. One for each child that they did the same to on the road to the city.

Sansa is starting to get a full picture of what happen in the kings murder. Lady Olenna and Littlefinger all but blurted it out and its now clear how it all took place. Littlefinger planted the necklace on Sansa so that Lady Tyrell could carry out the final step of putting the poison into the kings drink. Sansa is going to take much of the fall for it, it seems, but even Jamie is not convinced she could have known what was going on, as he sends Brianne to defend and protect her against Ceresi and to hold his promise to Lady Stark.

The ending of the episode was interesting also, we got to see what appears to be an alter or shrine deep within the Whitewalkers territory and we get to see what they have been doing with the boys that Craster was giving up. Creepy and interesting all rolled into one.
