Hey everyone, I’m on leave from fighting the forces of evil across the galaxy and bring you once again reviews for Defiance.
The episode begins with the Provisional Mayor, who is over dressed in my opinion, making a Founders Day speech to the people of Defiance. When finished he proceeds to ask Amanda to be his Chief of State to which she turns down. We are then shown Nolan who promptly kills Thesho a Castithan in his search for Irisa. The information he received leads him to Santa Monica where he is captured by people he stole from, but Irisa shows up and saves him. Back in Defiance a miner is killed resulting in his two sons to threaten the E-REP. The boys are taken into the forest and “escape” resulting in the death of one of them via Hell Bug. Outraged, Amanda accepts the position of Chief of State to better control the provisional Mayor. Alak is overthrown by Stahma who finally asserts her power by taking control of her imprisoned husband’s financial empire; little does she know that Datak (her husband) has hatched a plan with Yewll (the Indogene doctor from season 1) to escape the prison they are in. We then go back to Irisa who kills someone, but doesn’t tell Nolan. The two of them then begin the ride back to Defiance while unbeknownst to Nolan, Irisa is still seeing the little Irathient girl. One of the final scenes is of the provisional Mayor watching Amanda through cameras he has set up in her room.
To get it out there I will say now that for a Season Opener this was pretty weak. I was disappointed with the content and was left still waiting for something to happen that never did. I am reminded of filler episodes in television series. The plot for this episode jumped around multiple times. In my opinion there are too many story arcs going on at the same time: Nolan and Irisa, Stahma and Alak, Datak and Yewll, Amanda and the Provisional Mayor, etc. With so many story arcs there is a lot of content, but not exclusive to one arc. This prevents me from finding a character I like and from being able to follow a clear story line. I appreciate that the creators are trying to have a lot of story and character arcs to keep us entertained, but there is such a thing as too many and I feel that that has been reached.
There are several things that I would like to note though.
The first is the CGI. For the first time we were really able to see what a Hell Bug looked like clearly. In the previous season we only saw dark and unclear images of them. I was happy to see how detailed they were this time, including the glow emanating from within their throat.
I am not sure how cute the producers think they are, but having Datak be sexually aroused in most of his scenes was distracting from the show and the scene between him and Yewll was completely unnecessary. I am all for a comedic scene here and there, but having that scene being Datak sexually aroused is a big turn off. Now I understand the Castithan race is a sexually liberated race, but there is a line between making it a mature part of their culture and giggling about it like school children; the line was crossed.
The attempt to explain why it didn’t take Nolan long at all to get from New Chicago to Santa Monica was pitiful. For the sake of time I will not discuss his mode of transportation, but that irked me as well. All I will say, is that the one line the Provisional Mayor said at the end to Amanda which could easily have been missed about how it took her 3 months to come to her decision, is the only way we are told that that amount of time passed in one episode; which still asks the question, “How the frak did it take Nolan that long to get to Santa Monica?” Now I could be mistaken and have misinterpreted this element of the show wrong.
However, all things aside, I was still entertained for the 42 minutes it took me to watch this episode. So I guess it did its job to an extent. I was still not overly thrilled by it, but this is only the first episode and there are many more to come that will hopefully make up for and improve upon this first one. Till next time and don’t forget to watch Defiance on SyFy at 8/7C – CLARK OUT
