Constantine

Constantine: Series Preview – “All Trench Coat and Arrogance”

Next week, Hell comes to NBC. Constantine, based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, is the story of seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult  (“well, dabbler, really, I don’t want to put on airs”) John Constantine (Matt Ryan), who is armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and a wickedly naughty wit. I haven’t read the Hellblazer series (I’m working my way through Pandemonium), but this show looks exciting, with enough action, wit, and demon disgustingness to get me through.

John Constantine takes on a rising darkness as he fights to reclaim his soul. He’s tortured by demons – both real and emotional, and fights the good fight — or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to abandon his campaign against evil until a series of events thrusts him back into the fray when an old friend’s daughter (guest star Lucy Griffiths) becomes the target of supernatural forces. With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine will use his skills to travel the country, find the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

Constantine - Season Pilot

Welsh actor Ryan was the voice of Edward Kenway in video game Assassin’s Creed IV; and has been seen in Vikings and as Mick Rawson in Criminal Minds, as well as in one episode of one of my favorites, Torchwood. Hopefully, this show will be better than past shows with somewhat similar themes: Reaper (2007-2009), which featured Ray Wise as the Devil; and The Collector (2004-2006), whose only redeeming quality (hah) was small glimpses of Colin Cunningham as Satan. But from the first episode, Constantine seems like a richer, more interesting show – certainly the back story and pedigree is much deeper than its predecessors.

The cast also includes Angélica Celaya (Dallas) as Zed, Harold Perrineau (Lost) as the angel Manny and Charles Halford (True Detective) as Chas, Constantine’s closest mate.

Writer Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist, Dexter) serves as executive producer with David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Rises). Constantine is produced from Bonanza Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The show is based upon characters published by DC Entertainment.
