‘Mortal Instruments’ TV Series ‘Shadowhunters’ Hits ABC Family

After over a year of speculation, the TV series based on the best-selling young adult series ‘The Mortal Instruments’ by author Cassandra Clare, is coming to life. ABC Family announced on Tuesday that it had picked up 13 episodes of the series currently titled “Shadowhunters.”

“I’m excited to see ABC Family bring the world of the Shadowhunters to life. As a huge fan of long-form television drama, I can’t wait to see the story unfold and for the fans to have more time with the world and the characters,” said Clare in a statement to the press.

The series follows Clary, an 18 year old girl that finds out she’s part of a long line of angel-human hybrids that hunt down demons. A New York Times bestseller for 122 consecutive weeks, the series is considered a perfect fit for ABC Family. Ed Dector ( “Helix”) will serve as executive producer and showrunner for the series. Production is set to begin on the series this May in Toronto. A cast has not yet been announced for the series.

Unlike similar YA series “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent”, The Mortal Instruments already has 6 books out, and the expansive nature of the series lends itself more to a TV adaption where they are less likely to cut out important story points to fit it into a 2-hour movie. The 13 1-hour episodes are expected to start off with the first book and work their way through the rest as the series continues.
