Requiem of the Rose King is a manga that has been published by Viz Media and is based on Shakespeare plays. Fans of Richard III and Henry VI might enjoy the original take on the plays. Requiem of the Rose King takes place in medieval England. This is during the war between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Young Richard is extremely determined to help his father obtain his rightful place as the king. However, in order to do this, Richard must fight through the shortcomings that his body has forced him to deal with. He must also do everything he can to ensure that no one finds out about his body. Only his close family members know. I can only imagine what will happen if his enemies find out.
Requiem of the Rose King is written by Aya Kanno. The artwork is extremely detailed and beautiful. Aya Kanno does a wonderful job of keeping everything blended together. In addition, the characters are designed to look extremely beautiful. This is meant to add to the fantasy elements of the manga. In addition, it adds contrast to the looks of young Richard. The artwork adds mysterious fantasy elements quite well. It makes the world seem more magical than it would be otherwise.
The story of Requiem of the Rose King does not start slow at all. We are immediately introduced to the relationship between young Richard and his mother. She seems to be absolutely convinced that he is the devil. She is also convinced that he will bring about the death of his father. Richard is extremely close to his father. He shares the same name and his dad was the only one to show him kindness when his mother wanted to get rid of him. When his mother abandoned him in the woods, his father came to his rescue. He always tries to ensure that Richard is never excluded. However, when his father is not around, his mother says hateful things to him and constantly rejects him. She does not like the way her husband listens to everything young Richard says to him. This will play an important part of the story later on in the manga.
Despite the problems that Richard faces, he continues to be strong and refuses to let anything bring him down. I felt very touched by Richard’s determination. He wants to be exactly like his father and he trains as hard as he can to do that. He hopes that one day he will be able to impress his father during battle, like his brother Edward.
Various events make things difficult for Richard and his family. For example, his family is taken hostage during the battle between York and the Lancasters. In addition, Richard sees images of a witch known as Joan. Could this be a reference to Joan of Arc? However, despite the fact that Richard brings good news of rescue to his mother, she believes he is full of lies and refuses to trust in his good news. This makes their capture harder for Richard to deal with. I can only imagine the pain he is going through when she speaks to him like that. Richard’s ability to sneak out of the dungeon they are being held in also provides fuel to the fire. After all, only demons can sneak in and out of a dungeon so easily, right?
He meets Henry during his adventures outside and they form quite a strange relationship. I am positive that this will affect the outcome of the story immensely. Richard is convinced that he must kill King Henry, even after his father takes over the throne. Certain events in Requiem of the Rose King will make him want to do so even more. Richard and Henry have their own personal demons that they are unable to handle alone. This is what brings them together.
The manga ends with one final battle between the Yorks and the Lancasters. Unfortunately, Richard was unable to join this battle. The events of this battle will change everything for Richard, Henry, and the rest of Richard’s family. I honestly cannot wait to see how Requiem of the Rose King Volume Two will bring all the characters together for this tragedy. I find reading the plays that Shakespeare has written in the form of a manga quite fascinating. This is especially the case for stories with so much tragedy hidden within their pages.
