This series is an American version of a beloved French series, Les Revenants. It can be touted as “a ghost story for grown ups”. What we have in The Returned, is confusion, terror, and mystery. What would you do if your dear departed loved one returned from the dead? It is not your Walking Dead type of return. These souls come back as if nothing has changed. They have no memory of their own death, just confusion as to what happened to them. It is creepy to say the least, but how their “live” relatives handle their return is what this show is all about. Set in the small mountain town of Caldwell, Washington, we find that 4 years ago there was a tragic school bus accident. All of the students and a chaperone were killed, and Camille, (India Ennenga), was one of those students. Present day flash forward, we see Camille return to her family home, much to the shock of her mother Claire (Tandi Wright).
Claire, Jack and Peter are clearly in shock as to Camille’s return, but Claire is so overjoyed to have her daughter back. Camille’s sister Lena, (Sophie Lowe), seems less than ecstatic that her sister is back. She seems downright terrified! She is Camille’s twin, and she played sick the day of the bus trip and resulting tragedy. Jack seeks comfort with a so called spiritualist and con artist named Lucy, (Leah Gibson), who has duped him into believing she has been talking to his dead, but now returned daughter. Other returned start coming forward. We meet Victor, (Dylan Kingwell) a strange, quiet little boy, who is seen sitting at the bus stop all alone. Julie,(Sandrine Holt) is a compassionate doctor, who finds Victor and feels compelled to be responsible for him. What is this boy’s story?
We meet Simon, (Mat Vairo), whose dashing good looks make it hard to believe he is really dead. He is searching for Rowan. Rowan, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, is viewed sitting in front of a mirror with a wedding veil, looking lost and alone. When he finds her house, he starts banging frantically on the door calling her name. She collapses at the door, crying and telling him to go away. Who is Simon? Why does he need to get to Rowan?
An elderly man sleeping… He wakes to noises in the kitchen and a much younger, dark haired woman. He calls the doctor and then doesn’t speak and hangs up. Later we see him jumping off the dam to his death! Confusing? Yes, but wait for further episodes to find out the reasons behind all of the returns. Who are they? Why have they come back? Are there things they need to finish in this life? A murder occurs in a dark tunnel walkway, we see flashes of Camille flipping out on the bus, Victor standing in the middle of the road. Did he cause the accident?
I must confess that I am a big fan of the original French version, subtitles and all. Although our American counterparts are following the first episode almost word for word, only time will tell. I was freaked out by the original. Creep factor 10 on my scale. So please give this a chance. I think you will like all the twists and turns and character development in this series. I will give you kudos for watching this alone. It will definitely provoke your thoughts on life after death.
