Galaxy Quest, the 1999 feature film that starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Enrico Colantoni, Tony Shalhoub and other greats, may be finding new life as a TV series, reports Deadline Hollywood. If you aren’t familiar with Galaxy Quest, run out and get it NOW! It’s about a group of actors from a long-gone TV space adventure show, a la Star Trek, who continue to cash in – if that can be the right term – on their popularity with the convention set by appearing at grocery store openings, cons, and more. But their fame has gone beyond Earth – literally – and they’re mistaken for real heroes by an embattled group of aliens who have seen the “transmissions” of their “heroic exploits,” and beg for help.
Remakes and new life on TV seem to be on the increase (of course, I write about Outlander, which is taken from a successful book series) – Walking Dead from a comic book series; Netflix’s new Daredevil; the multiple versions of Batman, Spiderman, all the individual and collective Avengers; Game of Thrones; Gotham… Why not? Take an already-known quantity – a successful film or book, with an already-excited audience, and spin it out! This isn’t limited to sci fi, of course – Michael Connelly’s LA police book series is Amazon’s Bosch. I don’t have any trouble with this at all – I have really loved many of these shows (the aforementioned Outlander, Dominion, based on the film Legion) and should Galaxy Quest actually get all the way through the process, I’ll be watching it for sure!
Let us know – what would you nominate for a TV series – which books, movies, comics? Why do you think it would be great? And what absolutely should NOT come back? Give us your list! And if you’re not familiar with the film, or it’s been awhile – pick it up here on Amazon!
