Teaser: New Attack On Titan Live Action, Hit Or Miss?

Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 8.56.16 PMWhen news of a live action version of Attack On Titan was first announced, most of us all cringed in fear of what it would turn out to be. I mean seriously, when was the last time a property like this, which was a Manga turned anime before it became a live action film, actually turn out good? Teasers have come under fire lately, as have trailers in general. Over the years some have revealed too much and others took so many scenes out of context fans were upset after watching the film. Recently releases of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Batman Versus Superman have both had polar opposite receptions, the former being largely positive.

So this newest trailer reveals an even closer look at the titans and some of our main characters and iconic scenes. The real question is, did the trailer hit or miss in getting you the fan excited for the live action film? My initial response is that it was a hit. I half expected a spectacle more than a serious attempt at a live action version of a very dark series. However, that doesn’t mean it didn’t miss in areas too. To start with where it hit the mark was the dark and gritty tone to the world of the titans. This is not a happy place or a bright, sunny, blue skies kinda place. The world of attack on titan is dark and the trailer brought that through to the screen. We also get another close up look at the titans and they are as scary as the Manga portrayed them to be. The mix of CGI and practical effects is a plus in this situation given that this film doesn’t have the help of multiple production company budgets like most western films.

Where did it miss? There is a major feature of the story missing out of every trailer spot so far, the 3D maneuvering gear. It is the iconic equipment of the soldiers and we have not seen them in action yet. Though you can see from the screen cap above that they do appear to be wearing the gear, we can only hope we actually get to see them in actiScreen Shot 2015-04-17 at 8.55.52 PMon with it. The other point is that Mikasa was the last of her race in the Manga, but the casting basically wipes out that story plot completely. There is also no blonde Armin. I can’t complain about this too much because hollywood has been guilty of recasting race in films more often than I can count. But, the lack of any 3D monkey slinging action with the gear is something we better see soon.

So, as a fan of the Manga or the Anime tell us your thoughts on the live action film which is set to be released around Aug of 2015 in Japan.
