I have to admit I kinda scratched my head when I heard CBS gave Supergirl a series order. This didn’t seem like a good fit and I was worried about how the show would turn out, but after watching this first look I’m completely and unabashedly in love with the show. Yes, it only took 6 1/2 minutes of video to change my mind completely. Watch the video. If you had any doubts, I think most of them will be washed away, too.
Supergirl isn’t exactly what you’d expect, at least not completely, and that’s a good thing. Obviously, there’s going to be the “sending our child to Earth” bit and there’s even the clichéd “saving the plane full of people from a fiery death” scene, but the show gives a knowing nod to this with a bit of wry humor. As she’s trying to bring the plane under control, Kara looks ahead and sees they’re headed straight for a bridge and exclaims, “Oh, come ON!” It’s a fun wink at the beloved, old trope and it’s just one small part of what makes Supergirl work.
Melissa Benoist is also dorkily adorable as Kara and I’d watch a show about her even if she couldn’t fly.
I apologize for paraphrasing the tagline from the Christopher Reeve movie in the title, but it felt appropriate after my reaction to the video. I wasn’t ready to believe CBS could pull off a superhero show, especially one with as much history and recognition as the Kryptonian orphans bring to the table, but they did. And I do believe this girl will fly.
Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago with her famous cousin. Now at the age 24, she finally embraces her superhuman abilities to be the hero she was always meant to be.
