Check out this video highlighting the great moments in Michael Rooker and Jason Mewes’s panel at Wizard World Comic Con Minneapolis on May 2nd, 2015!
Jason Mewes is most widely known as the never-silent half of the cult heroes Jay and Silent Bob, first appearing in 1994’s Clerks and moving on with the ever-growing popularity of Kevin Smith’s subsequent films Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Clerks II. In addition to his ongoing role as the hilariously inappropriate ying to Silent Bob’s yang, the Jersey native has also appeared in a variety of indie films, television roles and video game voiceovers. To name only a few, Jason has appeared in the films Pauly Shore is Dead, National Lampoon’s TV: The Movie, Gone Baby Gone, Bitten, Breath of Hate, Silent But Deadly and Noobz. He has also worked on several television series, most notably Vigilante Diaries and Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. Jason has also performed in several voiceover roles such as Jay and Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, the animated series Clerks, and a brief voiceover role in the videogame Scarface.
Michael Rooker, who portrays survivor “Merle Dixon,” burst on the scene more than two decades ago in the title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. He also had key roles in Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 hit Cliffhanger and the Denzel Washington/Angelina Jolie blockbuster The Bone Collector in 1999, as well as popular films such as Mississippi Burning (1988), Sea of Love (1989) and Days of Thunder (1990). While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career.
As you might expect when these two get together in front of a crowd, the panel got a little rowdy, but always in good fun. Rooker and Mewes answered fans’ burning questions and shared some highly entertaining stories–many of them featuring hot tubs. They discussed Stan Lee, Kevin Smith, and even had an absurd moment or two on stage (the most memorable being Michael Rooker riding on Jason Mewes like a pony).
Rooker is widely known for his role on The Walking Dead and Guardians of the Galaxy, but some people remember him from Mallrats, which is why these two got a panel together. Part of the fun was knowing that they shot Mallrats at the Eden Prairie Mall, not far from Minneapolis. Here’s hoping they film the sequel in Minnesota, too!
Near the end of the panel, Michael Rooker called up James Gunn himself to ask if Mewes could have a part in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Only time will tell if anything concrete comes of this fun moment. And to bring everything to a close, Rooker brought out a giveaway prize: a canvas bag with Yondu’s portrait on the front panel. After scouring the audience for anyone cosplaying as Merle or Yondu, a boy dressed as Merle (with fake arm and everything!) was brought on stage. He was given the bag and a hug from Rooker himself. What a great experience for that kid!
Rooker and Mewes were a pleasure to have at Wizard World Comic Con and Minneapolis was happy to have them.
