Wayward Pines – Ep 2 Review: Don’t Discuss Your Life Before

It seems as though Wayward Pines has some rules that have to be followed.
Do not discuss your life before.

Ethan Burke has already broken one of them, he tried to leave. Sheriff Pope is all about the rules. He doesn’t like that Ethan isn’t conforming. He orders Ethan to stay in his room at the hotel, but, oh well, that doesn’t last long. Ethan slips away to check on colleague Bill Evans’ dead, rotting body, only to be caught by Pope just as he caught glimpse of a notebook tucked in Evans’ shoe.

At the bar, Ethan rings the Secret Service office but is stonewalled again by “Marcy,” whom he catches in a lie. When Ethan lobs questions at Beverly, she turns the music up and pulls him into a “dance,” whispering that there are microphones everywhere. They agree to meet later to discuss his latest findings.

Ethan stops by the toy store where Kate works. After being formally introduced to her husband, Harold, Ethan presses Kate about her new life, the town’s funny money (counterfeit,) and whatever else is going on, she lays out for him the four rules, as posted throughout town:
1. Do not try to leave.
2. Do not discuss the past.
3. Do not discuss your life before.
4. Always answer the phone if it rings.

Kate tells him about Bill Evan’s widow, pointing him to the house.  But Mrs. Evans has no answers for Ethan, only more mysteries, maintaining that her husband A) did not work for the Secret Service but mowed lawns, and B) killed himself, was not murdered. Ethan of course is chastised by Pope for grilling the widow, as well as told not to check out Evans’ body at the morgue. So of course he does, where he lifts the small notebook that he spied in Bill’s shoe.

With the notebook, he thinks that he and Beverly will be able to find a way to get out of town. Nurse Pam finds him and makes a remark about Ethan being anxious to see his wife again, so he can “bang her brains out”. Wow, Nurse Pam is really a strange creature! She literally scares the hell out of me!

After the exchange with Nurse Pam, Ethan sees his wife Theresa and his son, both being wheeled down the hospital hallway on a gurney, but his race to find her only turns up a worried Dr. Jenkins, who still wants to operate on Ethan. Afterward, Ethan shares with Beverly the “escape plan” he found on Bill. She says that before they can even think of trying it, they need to remove the tracker implanted in Ethan’s arm. During this process, Bev tells him that she came to Wayward Pines “a year ago,” in 1999. But it’s 2014, Ethan counters. And doesn’t she look good for 54! Ethan and Beverly run into Kate and her husband and are invited to dinner at their home. Wow, such a nice bunch of people here!

Ethan looks at the map that Evans drew and goes to the woods to try and find the way out. He hears a rifle shot in the distance and discovers a man shooting at something. Who is this and what the heck is he shooting at?

Meanwhile back on the home front, Ethan’s wife decides she is going to go look for him.

Bev and Ethan concoct a plan about the dinner. They will go into the bathroom at Kate’s and take out and hide their tracking chips. While they are eating,Ethan goes first and hides his chip. Kate and Beverly exchange nice talk and Beverly brings up the fact that she has a daughter back home. Uh Oh! Rule breaker here. Bev slips out of the bathroom in terror. Ethan excuses them both and says they have to leave.

Harold asks Kate,”do you think they’re gonna run?” to which Kate replies,”absolutely!”

Ethan catches up with Bev and she is freaking out that she let it slip about her daughter. He tries to calm her but then a phone rings. Then all the phones start ringing and all the lights start coming on! Bev tells Ethan this is how it starts, this is what happened when they killed Bill! People are on the move. They are searching for them! Ethan tells her to run and that they will meet at the cemetery. She takes off.

Ethan takes off running in a different direction to distract them. But Beverly is caught anyway!. Pope chains her up to a galley in the town square, ranting about how its not just his job to keep everyone safe, it’s everybody’s! He cuts her throat while Ethan watches from a window in hiding! Oh well, there goes Ethan’s only ally!

In the final scene, we see Ethan’s wife and son in a car, crossing into Idaho.

What will happen to Ethan now. Will he be caught and ratted out as a rule breaker too? And what will happen if his wife and son show up? If you think you have figured out what is going on in this town, let me know!
